Guess I'll just have to wait and see.

At least with DirectX 9 they could show you - right there in screen shots - what the new features did.

I haven't seen that yet in DX 10.

BTW, are all DX 10 cards going to be mega-long? They sure look HUGE - don't know if they would fit in some cases currently out there even though a 6800 or 7800 does.

9.5" isn't particulary long... the 12" monsters are sure big but I dunno, my X850XTPE is about 9" too... That's the standard size no?

Folks had just better get bigger cases with bigger PSU's and more cooling, it seems.

And I'm pretty happy with the current crop of DX 8 and DX 9 games. Don't look like I'm missing much at all.

Have you seen all those gameplay vids of Crysis running on DX10? Or have you seen Hellgate London? That's sexy my friend... I want a piece of that action

I think I'll wait till an affordable solution (directly and power requirements) is released before I break the bank again. My next comp will be a laptop.

But the visuals can be done in DX 9, can they not?

They do look awesome, but I just hope they don't sacrifice gameplay for graphics.

Besides, it's not like Far Cry ever looked bad anyway...

Have fun when you snag those games though. Perhaps they will be reason enough for people to give Vista a try.

most of the visuals can't be done in dx9 due to the hardware limitations and speeds. DX10 provides simplier code/smaller/more efficient allowing one to put in more graphically complex visuals.

I guess I will simply have to stop speculating and wait to see the products when they come out. I'm having trouble with my moderately sized brain in figuring this all out.

Most of the effects right now can be done in DX9 but for example, dynamic particles which react on a physical basis can only be done in DX10 (for example, a gust of wind dynimacally and in realtime moves the smoke)

And FarCry looked good for it's time, no doubt but to be perfectly honest, I can't stand it anymore... Tis just so... fake?

And as for gameplay over graphics, we didn't necessarily loose gameplay when PCs made the jump from DX7 to 8 and 8 to 9... So nothing to fear

I think developers are starting to lose sight of gameplay though as they strive for better graphics. When most of the money that goes towards the game is spent mostly on graphics you get a game that doesn't last nearly as long as it should have.

Think about those games that looked astounding in their day and are pieces of crap now and then look at the games that more time and effort was put into gameplay and you can still find people playing those games now.

This is exactly why I don't think GoW will last.

If you say so... Na what I mean is that the models are plasticy, the water is far from spectacular and all in all, to my eyes it can't even compare to half the games available on the market...

Then again, I love purty graphics and that's why me and DX10 were meant to be!

Well most likely to show off the capabilities first will probably be Futuremark (showing it off right at it's peak abilities in person IF you have the hardware, and i wouldn't doubt that there would be videos uploaded later)

Mum in distress,,,

Hi!
Help me out here!
WARNING: there may be some stupid questions asked!
We are about to buy a new system, the man in the shop suggested a good graphics card, nothing over the top, but said we could then upgrade it in a year for a Direct10 card and then Install Vista. The card is Radeon x1650xt ISilenceII 256mb PCI-E.
The Motherboard supports Quad core (ASUS P5B Deluxe), the hard drive is a Raptor 150gb 10.000r and it will have a Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13 ghz processor, plus Windows Xp. That's our limit as in pricing goes.
BUT, now my daughter says the new cards will be out very soon and that we should get Vista to make the most out of it...
So here are the stupid questions...
1.How soon is soon (this computer is not just for her!)
2.Will Direct X 9 games play on the new Direct X 10 cards?
3. Can the new cards be installed on XP?
She plays RCT3, SIMS 2, ZT2 and the like, no Doom or Halo or whatever!!
I'm thinking, stick with the suggested card and XP and then upgrade in a year?
Any help would be appreciated...sorry if this is too long!!

When we are dealing with new OSes and technologies, waiting is always a good thing. The first wave of boards are always expensive and with not that great drivers. With Vista the same thing.
You can't go wrong with this configuration you choosed.

And it will take months for any dx10 game to apear anyway. The one year time frame should be fine.

I'd wait at least until the first official service pack out.

Plus, ATI hasn't even come out with their first DX 10 ard, and Nvidia is about to come out with their second.

Just hang in a wait. Don't put yourself through the pain of an upgrade now.

I wouldn't bother waiting for the next gen cards, go cheap on the current lineup of cards. I'd personally pick a x1650 (cheapest one) to start with combined with Vista, and buying XP now for a new machine and then having to buy Vista again shortly after will be a complete pain.

Heres the deal, do this.

Check online for anyone having issues with the games you mentioned that she plays regularly, if they have problems with Vista. Google it, go to the developers website, search around. IF none of the games have issues with vista, then i'd get the ati card, go with the setup you mentioned, install Vista Home Premuim, and thoroughly enjoy your system for several months. When the DX10 cards are in vast supply and there are midrange versions floating around, then purchase one and install it. This will probably be the cheapest way to go.

Btw, don't get Nvidia+vista related issues mixed up with ATI+Vista.

Thanks

Thanks everyone!!!
We've been discussing it at home and I think we will go for the set up we chose, probably install Vista Premium, in the near future (we can get a free upgrade from XP) and leave the card til later!
I still don't get one thing...will the "older" Direct x 9 games play on a Direct x 10 card?
Thanks so much for all your help!
Debs
ps better start googling!

Yes the older dx games will play on a DX9 card within vista, however if the game doesn't support vista at all, and there is no patch to make it work let alone workarounds, it won't matter what you've got.

Plus i'd highly suggest against going the UPGRADE path route with xp ~> vista. But in the end that is your decision.

Hi! Thanks for your time!
Let me try to make myself clear...If and When I install a Direct x 10 graphics card, will games made for Direct x 9 play on that new graphics card or will games only made for Directx 10 play on it?
Why would you not recommend going from Xp to Vista?...anyway, I will be wanting to do a clean install.
We are now discussing having the "old" computer (this one I am now on) and the new one (to be) connected to one monitor, keyboard and mouse, so the old one will be for the Internet and the new one basically for games and important stuff! It gets more complicated each time we discuss it!!
Thanks again!

I would suggest two monitors and two keyboards, even though you can make one work with a switch. If yo have a problem with one computer then you can keep the problem page up while researching on the other
