I hope everything goes well, and I hope they release great products in the long run
I just hope that 5 years from now there won't be annoying as hell commercials that play at least 50 times each hour:
"Dr. Meyer, what have been the benefits of the merger between AMD and ATI?"
*looks at watch* "Get in."

I voted that I "think" it is a bad idea. With my knowledge of finances and computer parts - thinking is often a bad idea. So am hoping it works out well, though I am a bit allergic to corporations getting even bigger.

Read this
http://www.driverheaven.net/dhinterviews/joncarvill/
Driver Heaven: Is the long term strategy to operate as one company or two? For example, will gfx still continue to be designed in ATI's existing facilities and CPU's on AMD's or should we expect to see a merging of engineers/designers where everyone provides expertise on forthcoming products?
Jon Carvill: The merged company will operate as AMD once the transaction close. ATI will continue to manufacture its graphics processors with TSMC and UMC. AMD is very comfortable with a hybrid approach to manufacturing as evidenced by our recent success in ramping microprocessor production at Chartered Semiconductor. Certainly, we anticipate that this merger will present new and exciting ways for our engineers to collaborate in areas like mobile, commercial, digital media and emerging markets.

befuddled
Well it sure makes my upgrade options muddled. I was going to get a new motherboard/cpu/graphics card/memory, but now I have no idea what to purchase except for the memory. (which video card will be supported by which chipset manufacturer, what is the best price/performance ratio per cpu, etc)

Considering the release timelines of chipsets, GPUs, and so forth from the past - we (as users and builders) probably won't even have to start to think about those kinds of issues for a year or so. The entire CPU and GPU industries have already got their products lined up for the coming year and need to implement them to keep the cash flowing...

if all goes well, i plan on upgrading in early spring (shortly after Vista is launched). ATM, i have my eyes set on the conroe and by then, the 8 series nVidia cards should be released. i'll even go as far as getting Vista for the benefits of DX10.

I dont care about it, as long AMD dont change ATI cards around, to AMD Radeon or something heh.
Also ATI should beable to fix up there chipsets so we can have better ATI chipsets.

Unlikely, Pizza Hut is already owned by the same company that owns Taco Bell, KFC, A&W, and Long John Silver's. That is probably a bit much for even McDonald's to stomache.

and the company that owns all them is Pepsi Co. Coca-Cola owns McDonalds (or at least has a steak in it's company since it does provide McDees w/it's soda)

There's really nothing good or bad about it. It all comes down to what happens next.
If it's a chance for ATi to continue their current line, than it will be bad (ATI hasn't had a solid mid-range line since Radeon 9500 days). If AMD steps in and imposes some changes, than it will be good.
Than again, I'm trying to remember when was the last time this kind of merger resulted into something good in the long run...

I think that it's great business for AMD but nVidia lost a lot of business. I expect that AMD will direct all their efforts for compatibility with ATI. I am running on a AMD processor on an nVidia GPU, and I think its the best setup ever.. IMO bad for the customer, good for the company. It was gonna happen sooner or later..

Good to see the positive comments making a comeback, in the beginning of this poll people didn't sound very enthusiastic about the merger idea!
Not that my crystal ball is giving me any real vision on this one.

Ok, just thought of something: now that AMD makes its own chipsets again, maybe we'll see mobos that don't support overclocking for AMD too.

Just a thought I had this morning,Amd and Ati,..well ok but notice how the new Intel chippset's remind us of Nvidia,...ie,..Nvidia G6800/ intel E6800 seems to me that something was in the works in the shadows way back.Kinda of ironic that with the G6800
nvidia was takin over as the vid king and now intel is doing the same as the Processor King.

Eh, Intel has been doing it for a while: they have both a CPU and a chipset with the name of 945

From the looks of recent testing of the Core 2 Duo.. AMD's merger with ATI is moot. Gamers are going to buy the Core 2 Duo.

I`m very exited, you should`nt be worried about this.
Remember Ati has always given us great stuff, and same as AMD, both has given us the best in technology, mergin together and thinking the same way: will give us their best and two heads thinks better than 1.

This can only be a good thing in many ways. Notably, there are already talks about opensourcing part of ATI's drivers, which is great.

I reckon that them joining forces will mean much better things from both companys. AMD can help with problems ATI has and vice versa. Also it means they could distribute the money where more work is needed. Unless Intel and Nvidia pair up this new partnership could mean no more Nvidia or Intel (even if it does sound unlikely). For the consumer this will mean that we should get much better deals and more competative pricing.

so you're saying that the money spent into ATI's buy-out would have best been spent into R&D of a new CPU that would be comparable or even better than Intel's Core 2 CPU?
if you are, then i'm with you on that.

i wouldn't count out amd just yet. they have held the crown for quite some time now. and know how to keep it. i believe that intel just caught amd while am2 is stil in it's infancy. and all they really needed to do is get all the bugs out of DDR2.
