Tookie Williams and capital punishment

http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/12/13/wi...ion/index.html
here it is just hours away and the protests from Hollywood celebrities and activists are moot against the overwhelming evidence against Tookie Williams and his death penalty decision, but should he have been granted clemency for his work against gang violence?

I think if he showed more remorse over what happened then he would deserve clemency. I respect that he did write those books but that isn't enough. Also, I don't think he wrote the books just to get off death row. One thing that pisses me off about all this is Rev. Jackson said the Gov said no because of political reasons. The same could be said if he had said yes. It wasn't easy for him to decide this. This probably will be the hardest decision the Gov will have to make. On a side note, I don't think the Gov will be re-elected and they will state this issue during the next elections. This where I think politics suck. Always looking at the negative instead of the positive. People need to remember when they point fingers that there is three other fingers pointing back at them.

I think he should be executed - and im against capital punishment!
He murdered 4 people and publishing a bunch of books doesn’t change that.
If ever given the chance to vote against capital punishment I would but I can see why people support it. He murdered 4 people. In California that’s a capital offence so he should be executed.

I am for capital punishment but only for the worst of criminals. i.e. The BTK Killer, Manson, McVeigh. BTK and Manson got off too easy though. Those guys really showed no remorse for what they did. I don't think Tookie is anything like those psychos.

You have contradicted yourself, either you are for, or you are against capital punishment.

I think some childrens books and Hollywood support falls miserably short of the price in lives this man cost, regardless of his accomplishments..

This is exactly how I feel the death penalty is reserved for offenders that are a constant danger to society, like serial killers and terrorists. Tookie was not a danger and he is serving a life sentence had he been allowed to live his work against gang violence could save some kids lives.

Knowing this, anyone supporting his death should be ashamed.

1)They say her never has admited to commiting the crimes nor did
he really claim thats he wasn't guilty. 2) as the evidence agasint him,
includeing his bragging to those closest to him etc... was overweamling

He killed unarmed people, for example a shop keeper / what ever, on
his face on the floor and he shot him in the back. No reasoin at all just cold blooded murder....

3)Also another thing he refused to "help" in gang related cases. IE talking
to the people invovled to try to get them to fess up or what ever... Wich
he refused...

The man had been in the pen for 26 years! esculating appeals, wich is insane..

If he'd said he did it, aplogised to the familise and assisted the goverment
then I think he would of been graneted clemancy.... things he would of done
if he really was such a "changed man"

Im saying he should be executed because that’s the punishment for that crime in California. Its not an issue I feel strongly about, I can see both sides of the argument I guess. If ever given the chance to vote on capital punishment I would still vote no but I can tolerate it for crimes as horrific as these ones.

My main objection to capital punishment is the risk of executing someone innocent or the murder (because that’s what capital punishment is) of someone who although may have committed a terrible crime does not necessarily deserve it die.
He didnt kill 4 people in a jealous rage or because he was mentally ill. He killed once and then less than 2 weeks later killed 3 more people. His possibly indifferent (since he was able to murder on a second occasion in a completely unrelated incident) attitude towards murder and lack of redemption more than qualifies him for the harshest punishment available under the law. In California that is death. That’s why I support the execution.

This probably sounds hypocritical and a little crazy but that’s how I feel.

no man, what you said made sense. So what your sayin is you think its a justified execution under the state law, but you would rather there not be a Capital Punishment altogether in the future?

"Race is only important here because Williams told one witness that he shot 26-year-old convenience store worker Albert Owens twice in the back because Owens was white."

He also made fun of this fellow while he died. I believed he called the asians he shotgun murdered, including one young girl, "Buddaheads".

Now imagine if this was a white criminal.

I have no tolerance for violent criminals. My only regret is they spent 650,000 usd keeping him alive since what '81?
