there is a chemical/biological reasoning for this. but to explain the emotion itself, then that would be quite a task as everybody has their own opinion on the matter.
To me, it is an emotion that makes you feel happy around one particular person. Now, there are different forms of love between people. There is the love between a mother and father, love between child and parent(s), love between sibblings, love between gf/bf or husband and wife.
Like i said, there are all kinds of different ways to express this emotion. It will be hard to explain. People know when they are in love, but don't really know how much that love between that person meant until the person is no longer there. I guess i am saying that out of experience, but who am I to say I have as much experience in life when you Mr. Fallang, probably have double the years in life over me.

It is a chemically useful bond that enhances the ability of family groups to stay together for long enough to ensure the success of their offspring.
Sometimes however, the chemistry is just not (or so it seems) powerful enough.
I guess that's what they mean when they say that the chemistry has to be right.

Love is a word. What matters is the connection the word implies.

Love is giving...
Love is sacrifice....
Love is selfish.....
Love is finite......
Love is eternal.....
Love is the flesh...
Love is the spirit....
Love is pain.....
Love is joy.....
Love is not an event, but a process
Love is simple and a bloody mess..
Love is more than life

Well, I can't say I know what love is, even though I'm very much in love with my wife. I do know that it's not just a crush of greater magnitude or longer duration. It's something completely different.
There's one point I've got to disagree with on that list of yours, Jeff: True love is not exactly selfish. Selfish people often have a hard time loving somebody because, as you said, it's giving (and in some cases sacrifice).
Here's a couple of points you could add to the list:
Love is a lot of work... (Sometimes hard, but always rewarding)
Love is patient...
Love is forgiving...
Love is trust...
Love is respect...

I know that love is chemical because it affects us, our brain waves are changed, we enjoy some sort of physcialogical change, it is dynamic and fleeting, and yet it is not a thing, it is a feeling as well..

Love is something that cannot be defined. It lasts through death and even time itself.
Love is being a fool
Thats why I'm in love, because most people think its the most foolish thing.
If your in love, than you know the feeling.
If your not, or haven't ever been in love, then no one blames you for defining it as a chemical reaction.
Funny though, one word with four letters has more meaning than any other literature or language in this world or any other.

Ya know, when I first saw the title I was thinking of that song by Haddaway.."What is love, Baby don't hurt me, baby don't hurt me, no more.."etc..ANYWAY!
Here's a quote from an anime I like, called Trigun..
"Emotions of the heart cannot be defined."

Well as it happens I have been in love. But it is more like a drug than a chemical reaction. But like most drugs it has the potential to destroy you as well as give your life meaning. I have probably been burned more times by love than I have ever been fulfiled by it. But I wouldn't have it any other way.
Without love there probably wouldn't be any poets, or great authors, or works of art - and there would be no passion in the world. And that really would be tragic.

I heard from a freind some time ago, that when you're in love some chemical is released from the back of your brain, throughout your body, and it acts like a drug, giving you all sorts of feelings that you get while in love..then when you lose that love, the chemical withdrawls back into your brain, causing the depression. Don't exactly know if it's true or not, sounds really interesting though

Love seems at first a rush,
and the choice made to give in to it,
to relish it, and let it encompass you...
it flows like a waterfall, joyfully wetting your soul and spirit...
Then the rush subsides, with lifelong remembrance of the rush, and another choice is made
the choice not to give in altogether to self, to remain part within the other, and let the comfort
of the best possible kind of friendship - true kinship - carry on...
All the while within it, trusting enough to be moldable, formable, to the one you love.

There is no answer guys, don't be so quick to believe that it is a drug induced euphoria because that is the best science has to offer.
Love is greater than anyone can imagine, maybe this "drug" effect is a bi-product of it, but it is not an effect. But I believe Love is different for every person. Just depends on what you believe in.
