Dunno, maybe scrap paper. Neither candidate signed the "Memorandum of Understanding" though. Is there any footage of Bush stepping to the podium?

Yeah, maybe glasses for reading. I'm sure they aren't covered. Anyway Kerry may be many things, but I doubt he's a magician. If he had been writing notes it would have been pretty visible.
Seems a tad trivial to me. Is such a memorandum even real?
Maybe bush could have used a pen himself - though he might have needed an aid to show him which way up to hold it.

He was writing notes. And so was Bush. But they were only allowed to use the materials already at the podium. Which was blank paper and pencils/pens. And you would not believe the bullshit the candidates sign for debates. There hasn't been a real debate since like the 70s.

Seems that would hinder a debate more than help it. I mean, you wouldn't be able to spring any suprises on the other guy without him knowing about it first.
A memorandum of understanding is hardly a legal doccument anyway - and even if Kerry did use his own pen (or lucky pencil) it still seems like a pretty trivial offense - since as you say note taking was allowed anyway.
Whatever these guys think it was, I doubt it was some kind of weird psychic debate winning device beaming answers and clever retorts directly to Kerry's brain.
He has already shown he is a very good one on one debator in the past, not wooden or mechanical like Gore was. He has a sharp mind - it is just his gangly body that seems to take a while sometimes to catch up with it. Those great big oversized limbs seem a tad awkward, but he does have a sharp mind particularly in a debate - of that there is no doubt.
More than anything I think he has just suffered from bad advisors - or maybe he ignored the ones he had a little too much.

It does hinder a debate. Like I said there hasn't been a real debate since the 70s when it was handled by some women group. Now it's sponsored by major corporations for the left and the right. They also agree to not allow nader in the debate. It's horrible and I think this needs to be changed.

It was his picture of Jesus that he likes to look at for inspiration.

Is that official or just a lame bs excuse? I don't think Jesus would like him being pro choice.

Wouldn't Jesus be banned from that kind of debate?

Maybe it was a Voodoo doll of Bush. Maybe it was Kerry jabbing it through all Bush's answers that made him look so awkward?

Then again, possibly for once, on the scale of political scandal of maybe one to ten, no one really gives a shit.
