Well that in essence is the secret to good politics really. You pick a few good catch phrases and say them over, and over and over again. Eventually if people in an apparent position of authority say a thing often enough, people will begin to believe them no matter how unlikely the premise.
That is why despite there being no evidence whatsoever, 57% of Americans continue to believe that there was some kind of either direct or indirect link between Saddam Hussein and the September 11th attacks.
It might seem very odd to the rest of the world, but the fact is that what many people in America accept as their reality is very different from what we see as ours. That is why when they hear this kind of association (having heard and become accustomed to it so much now) that it seems a lot less controversial to them than it does to us. They have accepted a 'reality' that many of us have long ago rejected. They don't need evidence - and if they do it need only be of the flimsiest most circumstantial kind imaginable - all they need is repetition. Maybe this is because this repetition helps break the world down for them in simple terms that they can understand - who knows? But in American politics (and perhaps in politics in general) if you do not learn this lesson quickly you may soon find yourself in a loosing position.
I don't think Kerry learned this lesson very well at all. The vision of the world he presented was too dynamic, too complex, involved too many possibilities and 'what if's' and contained no where near enough consistent catch phrases for ordinary Americans to latch on to. American politics is now very much dominated by the soundbite, 30 seconds of easy to digest rhetoric now seems like the normal arena in which most important debates take place. Maybe people just don't have the attention span anymore for anything much more substantial. But anyway as someone here has pointed out already recently, debates in American politics really suck ATM.
TV debates, like good documentaries on TV seem to be a thing of the past. No one seems really keen to ask any hard questions any more. But more than this, not many seem very interested in the answers even if they did.
Sadly, I don't understand why that is at all.

No, this is your favorite political party at their very finest....I'm with John Edwards on this one now:
"I'd say if you live in the United States of America and you vote for George Bush, you've lost your mind."

Actually it's saying quite a bit more than just bashing Bush. I know you like to reduce everything to very simple terms - and if things don't always go your way it just makes to hug that photo of Bush you must carry arround just that little bit tighter, but although this is funny, it is still saying something quite clever and quite fundamental about the state of American society and culture at this time - and it manages to do it with only a very few words. It's just a pity that these are words who's true implication even you are unable to understand.
It is scary, because it shows with absolute clarity just how easily these guys have worked out a formula to excersise virtual total control over you and American society at large. From now on it is possible to wonder if all speeches should not be written this way - because the rest may only serve to get in the way of the message that this observation reveals to us.
Welcome to America boys - the land of those who are too afraid to be free.

On a slightly related note... Does anybody know if there is a large data base anywhere on September 11th and war on terror related quotes? I'd love to be able to search for key phrsases, specific words, videos and so on.
It would be useful for a project I am contemplating if there was.

And what have they got to do with either of these? Let me warn you you are talking to someone who is very much warmed on the subjects of politics and science - and who believes in both passionately. I assume you are talking as someone who knows very little of either? Everyone is allowed their politics - but in what way do you imagine the democrats are affiliated with the communist party?
