Hackers who secretly install "spyware" on others' computers and Internet users who copy movies and music without permission could face up to three years in prison under bills that advanced in Congress on Wednesday.

OH they are Hackers? Then what shall we name the RIAA, FBI & CIA ??

You Sir are right.. You can't let the common poor, enjoy the same things that rich criminals have....

see....i used to be a warez/movie/music whore...no joke...i went through on average 8-10, sometimes 15-20 gigs a week in mp3s, movies, games, and programs.
now....i don't download anything illegally. why?
1 - I realized it's wrong and if you won't pay for somethign you obviously don't need it
2 - I get MS products for free through school(i still hate them and hwo they do licensing )
3 - I live 200 yards from the police precinct, which monitors bandwidth
4 - Piracy is a very 'young angry teenager' sort of thing, and i seem to finally be outgrowing that

Well, I see nothing of that in Hawks post - and very little in his link!
Infact, they're not talking about anything you've posted! Here's some comments anyway
1. There's plently of free stuff that's legal on P2P networks and the internet. This includes some music.
2. Don't use MS - Go Linux/BSD/whatever. They're free
3. Of course, 30 gigs of traffic down has to be warez and not some punk playing Doom3 online non-stop
4. Arrrrrrr me harties!
Just because I use P2P software does not make me a criminal. Hey - my friend uses needles? Does that make him a junkie and a criminal or just someone who needs his diabetes shot?

yea..i wasn't tryign to go off topic, i was merely saying that i think moves liek thsi are in the right direction, as all this malware is stupid/evil/bad, although not hackign as they refer to it. However, hacking is bad as well, in some cases. Warez, Appz, Telesyncs, etc, are all harmful for the industries involved. MP3s are as well, but hardly to the extend as the aforementioned activities. Hacking for destructive purposes is wrong, be it stealing, defacing, etc. Hackign for ethical/educational gain is fine, imho, such as writing cracks, circumnavigating firewalls, etc
it's not what they do that's a problem, it's hwo they use their knowledge.
it's amazing to me that they can write a program that can enter system undetected, such as spyware and such....but it pisses me off that they use it to spam my mailbox and crash my machine rather then find better uses for such knowledge/skill
