UK jails are overcroweded, prisons bursting
The labor party has had ten years to address the overwhelming problem of jails, drugs and taxes and the track record is pretty bad. Well intentioned people suggest the government needs to crack down on this and crack down on that, but it is really the culture of the UK that is the problem. Like America, hedonism, thuggery and crime are so common place in public office, televsion and even on the high street that no one should blame the government really, the Labour party cant fix a country with these kinds of problems, it is up the people, the only thing government will do is raise taxes and continue to make promises they cant keep!!

If we want to put the bad elements under wraps, we will need to fork out the cash.

that is the most current popular position of average people polled informally on the streets, and they blame drugs and british law enforcement for it as well.

Why would people blame law enforcement?
Cain and Abel happened well before they had drugs, MTV and rap music...
Human nature is what it is. Bad folks should be locked up and we should be willing to pay the taxes to keep it that way.

when it comes to people on the street, its about "how much of this will cost me money?" and whether a parolee will live in their neighborhood, but what is alarming is the number of older criminals parolled well before serving their time, and the number of much younger criminals still in jails..its disproportinate to their crimes, but that is modern justice in the UK and in America as well....its very discouraging.
Toqueville said you could judge a country by looking at its prisons.

We could hold our representitives accountable and insist on stronger sentences - provided we were all willing to take a stand and to pay for it.

theres the rub...how much will it cost, when the government faces terrible criticism for mis managing so many things. The Home secretary is certainly attempting find viable solutions for all the problems the government faces now, but the worms are crawling out of the mud.

Given how many people from death row have been found to have innocent over recent years, I'm not so sure I can back the idea any more.
Dozens upon Dozens of people have been shown to have been wrongly convicted and sentenced to death based on DNA testing alone, not to mention instances where the authorities railroaded people knowing they were not actually guilty.
