monitor the sex offenders in your area.. (in the USA)
http://www.familywatchdog.us/
Truly enlightening. In Buffalo NY there are quite a few dirt bags out there.. this is a nice little tool.
Quote:
When you visit this site you can enter your address and a map will pop up with your house as the small icon of a house and red, blue, green, dots surrounding your entire neighborhood. When you click on these dots a picture of a person will appear with an address and the description of the crime he or she had committed.
The best thing is that you can show your children pictures and see how close these people live to your home or school. This site was developed by John Walsh from Americas Most Wanted. Another tool to help us keep our kids safe.
Please pass on .

Certainly helps to show your kids specific people to watch out for, but this can only help against people who have been caught already. The most important thing is to teach your kids general strategies to keep out of the hands of these sorts of people.

If anyone sexually abuses children, they have no right to privacy as far as i am concerned. It is a matter of public record anyway, this is just a way for people to access publicly accessible information.

Just saw the news in England about pedophiles and sex offenders, it seems that they get their sentences halved and they are not monitored when they are released.

Yes, it appears to be one of the few crimes for which rehabilitation is utterly impossible.

Yes, there is a valid arguement to keep them seperate from society for good. I'm not convinced that average citizen's have access to this info, I think it encourage's vigilantism.

I think the monitoring of sex offenders is wrong. Only bad can come of it whether for the offender himself or for vigilanties who might want to teach him a lesson and commit a crime of their own. The so called Megan's Law is unconstituional but supported because is it thought to help children, and nobody wants to be accused of not wanting to help children.
A better solution would be to hand out stiffer sentences with no parole for these miscreants. The problem is not that we need to know where they live, it is that they are allowed to live in freedom at all.

I found someone that rode my school bus as a kid. I think he was either my age or a year younger.
One thing I definitely remember as that we harassed him to no end.. he was (and still is apparently) a complete moron.

What an absolutely brilliant idea, once again my faith in human intelligence is restored. Now all we need to do is sit back and wait a short while, offender moves out of the house, family xy or z moves in and is toasted in bed when a petrol bomb is tossed through the window. Oh and God forbid the poor innocent neighbour who tries to put his home on the housing market.
Sometimes I worry that I think about things far to logically. I honestly despair for humans as a race.

Actually this is nothing new, these data bases have been around for a long time, and as I already said at least once, it is a matter of public record..
Things like you described just don't happen very often if at all.. You are assuming (wrongly) that everyone in the US is a vigilante murdering fool.

don't really like this idea - mistaken identity is pretty common
one guy from mel was harrassed for 6 years because someone thought he was a sex offender and spread it around

I do not like a child abuser or sex offender of any kind and if given the chance would really hurt one or worst. But, this is wrong and we all know it. What if they started listing the addresses and pictures of people convicted of a DUI, convicted pot smokers, people with a low IQ, non high school grads, or etc. This could and will happen. These type of sites being allowed to do this are going to make it that much easier for it to happen. The only way anybody should be able to access this info is by logging into an official state or federal run site with valid credentials for the purpose of knowing who is in his or her neighborhood. Not for people like us to view and make judgment without knowing all the facts. I know a couple people that have to register because of a couple years difference in age as they turned twenty one before there girlfriend. These are not bad people but went through allot of crap just to get a job or place to live.

Well depends on how ya'll look at it. Understand people make mistakes and if one makes a mistake like this should he be judged and watched for the rest of his life because of it?
Surely things like this should never happen, especially to children, but I believe all people have it within themselves to be forgiven. I'm not saying child rapists should just be forgiven after commiting a crime but I think it should be possible for one to continue his life after he has been punished (there is probably nothing worse in the world than being a child rapist/molester and being in prison) and rehabilitated.
These things will never be reversed, that is for sure. Nothing will ever make it right again for the kid or their family. But do you think someone who commits this crime once should be outcast, alienated, his crimes and resident posted all over the internet 20 years after the fact?
