PETA strikes again
I will say this up front: I hate PETA. I am all for the ethical treatment of animals. But PETA is seriously insane. This just reaffirms this fact:
Cockroach-eating contest bugs animal group
Quote:
|
Theme park operator Six Flags Inc, based in New York, is staging the contest as part of a promotion leading up to Halloween in which it is also offering customers free entry or line-jumping advantages if they eat a live Madagascar hissing cockroach.
|
However, PETA has This to say:
Quote:
As a corporation that owns animal theme parks, including at least one that's accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, Six Flags has no business encouraging the inhumane treatment of any animal.
Presumably, the cockroach was chosen for this "gag" because of the species' extremely negative image. However, this much-maligned invertebrate possesses keen senses, a quite docile temperament, and an amazing evolutionary history. There are even regulations restricting the abuse of insects used for films, because—regardless of how people feel about them—they suffer when hurt.
Six Flags is meant to be a place for family fun, not a place to teach children insensitivity to animals.
|
Yes, you hear that right. PETA now says we cannot kill cockroachs. Note that as near as I can tell from their website they have no problem with drenching crops in pesticides that kill helpful insects as well as harmful ones, but they don't let people eat insects and thus gain nutritional benefit from them. This is the same group that want to ban animal testing even to save human lives.
There are just so many organizations whose general principles I support but are so incredibly extreme, dogmatic, and inflexible that they simply lose touch with reality.
If this belong in flame warzone please feel free to move it, but last time I brought something like this up in that section it was moved here so I will assume the same principles apply in this case.

Most extreme animal rights people (including vegans) have no idea of what nature actually is.
Its a lion killing a new born zebra, not happy cows prancing through lush green meadows.

IMO, roaches are gross.......especially if they start to hiss . i'd bust out a rag, fly swatter, rolled up newspaper or something to kill the bugger.

Never liked PETA, but not for the reasons you listed black cat.
I'm cool with they themselve not eating stuff but I don't give a shit if an animal dies, especially a cockroach. Animals die, we are not meant to survive on just plants it has been medically proven.
Six flag's goal is not to give contestants nutrients they could get elsewhere but they are trying to see who would eat something gross. Hell let em, that's their business. What is PETA gunna do? send people to jail for accidentaly cutting a worm in half with a shovel while digging?
F*ck them. I love animals, but mostly for eating and the cute ones always taste better.
Edit: Peta is useless. I had this girlfriend before was a part of PETA. She was the dumbest most ill informed b*tch I have ever dated. Who ever came up with it is a moron, whoever leads it is a moron, and whoever supports it...well you can figure that out. They try to ruin the things I am actually allowed to enjoy.

I suspected for a while PETA was full of nutcases but it was Penn & Tellers Bullshit! that opened my eyes. PETA doesn't even think we should own pets!
You can watch that episode on google video
http://video.google.ca/videoplay?doc...nd+teller+peta
I might be out of line saying this but I think PETA is made up of loney ugly white women and closet case men and occasionally they snap up some youngins. I can't see Black people putting livestock above themselves that's the kind of stuff white people excel at.

Meh PETA is for dillusioned people who have really NOTHING better to do in life. And they are always women...
I wonder, with the US so strict with terrorism and tying sometimes people to it with super cool spy technology, why can't they get PETA marked as a terrorist organization?
I swear, the first person to destroy PETA will receive billions from me

PETA is a terrorist organization. They don't peacefully protest, they show up at events and throw blood at people wearing fur.
They send out a newsletter that's full of trite anthropomorphic stories about chickens stuffed in barns that I'm going to end up eating the next time I go to KFC.
I only tolerate vegetarianism/veganism for health reasons. If you want to eat that way and you think it makes you healthy, then go for it. That's how my girlfriend is although technically she's a pescatarian because she eats fish.
Whenever I meet one of these save the animals bitches I tell them the next time I go out to eat I'm going to order 2x the meat I normally do and "sponsor them as a meat eater". I explain to them that as long as I do this, I cancel out all the work they're doing to save animals.
That's when they STFU and don't tell me what I should and shouldn't eat.

Hey, at least it beats car-bombings, physical attacks, and stealing the dead bodies of family members. That is what their British counterparts do, at least against animal testing.

I also support it for religious reasons. Actually, I support it for religious reasons more than any other. That is for two reasons. One, they really didn't have a choice in the matter (it was mostly their parents' decision). Two, in my experience they are the least likely to preach about the problems with eating meat and are the least likely to be bothered by others eating meat. In fact I have never had a vegetarian for religious reasons (Hindus and Buddhists in my experience) complain about someone eating meat or try to get anyone else to stop eating meat. In fact last thursday a Hindu friend of mine was asking me what types of meat she should buy for an event because she didn't know what sort of meat people generally liked. Even those who do it for health reasons at some point generally explain to me why they made the choice, with not-so-subtle hints that I should follow their lead.
However, this is the best reason I have seen for beign a vegetarian
I am not a vegetarian because I love animals; I am a vegetarian because I hate plants.

That's no good. In the end that is just cancelling out what they do. You want what they do to actually be counterproductive. You need to eat 3x the meat. That way they are leading to the death of more animals than would die if they had just eaten meat themselves, and thus their efforts ultimately harm animals not help them.
(a good idea, but I did not come up with it myself. If anyone has the pic I got this idea from please post it because I cannot find it)

i remember an article some years ago about them. they went out to protest seal clubbing for the baby seals furs. what they did was ran out into the group of seals and spray painted all the babys white fur red so the fur would be useless for coats, gloves, etc.
polar bears and other animals that eat seals ate for a very long time on that stunt. the babies could no longer blend in with theire snowy surroundings because of the big red paint on them.
peta effectivly killed off every one of the seals them self.

best quote about PETA ever, came from Comedy Central's Roast of Pamela Anderson [she's a big PETA promoter, you know]:
"How can anyone so avidly in love with animals, put their own beaver through so much pain and hardship?"

I remember having a pet lamb once when I was 5 or 6. His name was Billy (everyone told me that was a goats name but I didn’t care) and he was tied up in our back yard and his house was our woodshed.
I got him for calf club at school. It was kind of like those dog competitions except for farm animals. All the townies like me borrowed animals (ones otherwise destined for the slaughter) from the local farmers and looked after them and trained them for a couple of months leading up to the event.
The day after the event he went back to the farm. Then, like a week later me and my dad got invited there where they had a lamb on a spit. It was very tasty. Took me ages to make the connection.
I think I have some photos of me and Billy somewhere.
Moral of the story:….ummm…lamb is nice?
Reason for telling it: I think its a cool story.

Will I kinda just posted it coz I think its a cool story.
But I some people dont want to acknowledge that what they are eating was once an animal, especially the kids like my brother who only eat processed “meat”. I know that what im eating was once a living thing, I feed it a bottle every day and it sure as hell hasn’t put me off meat!
Im an informed consumer lol

That is a great episode, very interesting indeed (saw it a while ago at nerdrocks place).
the problem with PETA is the same with most "activist" groups. It run by people who really can't function anywhere else in society. Probably has more to do with the terrible narrowmindedness and inability to see the big picture. Just a view of something sensationalized to them by their predecessors. Many probably join so they can feel a part of something, regardless of how disfunctional it is. For the record, I think people should treat animals with compassion and respect, but PETA certainly does nothing for their cause. Protesting Zoo's adn Butcher's shops and painting baby seals is not conservation.

what i don't get is the coperate photos with their pets... yeah, i don't get the hypocracy.
i hate saying this, but after the "liberation" what happens when one of the "liberate" lions bites the head off of the one trying to save it?
