Some Border Problems?

Well if you know it or not there are about 11 million illegal immigrants in the US. I truthfully don't have too much of a stance on it but I guess there are things in process to help with it. I haven't watched the news in ages but I was eating dinner and the tv was on.

Here is what I think:

Some other countries should help Mexico actually be a country for once so they can shoulder some sort of responsibility.

Very high walls with razor wire all up the fence. Maybe some automated turrets (joking bout the turrets).

Make English a requirement for legal immigrantion

At least have them pay taxes and health costs

Commiting a crime as an illegal imigrant in the US should be a straight deportation.

No wellfare for anyone who is not a US citizen.

Well thats what I can think of for now. I'm not sure bout shippin them all out of here because that is a hell of a lot of people. If we have the means for it and to make sure they don't get back, then it would probably be a good idea. I don't really have that much against illegal immigrants but they get more benefits than legal ones, and thats a bit f'ed up in my opinion. I think we have to start getting rid of the leeches on this nation, hey maybe it will help with the debt too : )

digerati will become famous soon enough

I actually got caught up in a demonstration today dropping a friend off at work. It's funny how I used to live in down town LA and knew many illegals, but the people on the streets weren't illegals, they were high school kids with slutty clothes and pierced faces. And then they started doing stupid things like walking on the freeway, as if showing disrespect for the law is going to show immigrants in a good light.

The real immigrants who have responsibilities, who come here to work, and work hard, don't have time to protest. They are a silent voice, and I wonder if these so called "protesters" do more harm to the cause than if they did nothing at all.

I know quite a fwe illegal immigrants, I believe everyone should be given a chance to become legal after we shut down the border. If they can't learn English in a certain period of time and prove that they are here to work then we ship em back. I'm only talking about the illegals of course. I truelly believe pressure needs to be put on Mexico to reform. Maybe we should ask for help from the UN or something and tell Mexico to get their act together instead or encouraging whats goin on.

Illegal immigrations is not just a US problem. Its an issue in Europe and even isolated NZ.

I think we need to work out how many unskilled workers we need (since that’s what they mostly are) and allow for that many work permits. If they stay out of trouble for x amount of years and can show they have a job they should be eligible for citizenship.

I also believe to become a citizen they must be fluent in English and accept that our western democracies are much more tolerant than whatever conservative backwater they came from.
Immigrants must accept that their religious/ cultural law is not valid in their new country. They are not allowed to beat their wives, commit honour killings or arrange their children’s marriages. They must also understand that others have the right to criticise their opinions and beliefs and vice versa. Basically they need to accept and be educated in core western values.

Any illegal immigrants should be deported.

I like the idea of making immigrants watch a video, like the Dutch.
Sorry guys I tried Google, I even searched cnn.com and bbc.com and all I got was yahoo news

Here is my litany of woe....

My first ex-wife, and third generation latina, and I call her 1 of 3 (like 7 of 9), insists that only the people of hispanic decent who lived in Southern California before they were forced off their land, have a right to come over and call the U.S. their home, though her logic is flawed, I have to agree that we (white folks) forced the Mexicans and Indians off almost all the property between the South and California, remember it wasnt that long ago that they owned all that land were successful ranchers and farmers, anyhoo, is there an anscestral right for native Americans and former Mexican landowners to reassert their claims on public and privately owned lands...well so far no. However America has grown so powerful economically based on the sufferage of illegal immigrants it begs a greater question doesnt it. They wouldnt be here unless wealthy established and newly emerging businesses hired them in great numbers to work without paying taxes. And what little they make, they very send home to Mexico (legally) to support their families there.
I live in Colorado Springs Colorado, and like Denver or Los Angeles or even San Francisco are "SANCTUARY" cities, which literally means that that INS and local law enforcement tend to look the other way unless these illegal immigrants violate the law, and even then they are not reported or deported as the case maybe. Only when the news media identifies a problem with illegal aliens is any attention given....and you know why?
We need them in our service industry
We need them in our landscaping industry
We need them in our Meat packing and food prep industry
We need them to till the fields, pick the fruits and vegetables
We need them to dig the ditches, smooth the concrete and hammer the nails
We need them to grow and increase the cities and communities that complain about them the most.

DO YOU ALL SEE THE HYPOCRACY?
Anyway....where was I ...oh yeah...
Our nation was build upon the backs of immigrant labor, legal or otherwise..

Well, I do understand we do need them, so the ones who work should be allowed to. I think we have to get the border problem neutralized first, then do something along the lines of what Pompey was saying. That way we give a fair chance to those who deserve it. I do believe English should be a requirement of our country because that was the language it was founded under and how everything is documented.

Also I did not know it was such a problem in other countries. Maybe there should be a border patrol reform around the world. Mexico really needs to be reformed, thats for sure.

Neither America nor New Zealand is overpopulated.

So long as they are above board I have no real problem with immigration, I myself am only second generation. At some point in time all our ancestors were immigrants.

Quote:
Senate Judiciary Committee's bill:

• Allows illegal immigrants who were in the United States before 2004 to continuing working legally for six years if they pay a $1,000 fine and clear a criminal background check. They would become eligible for permanent residence upon paying another $1,000 fine, any back taxes and having learned English.

• New immigrants would have to have temporary work visas. They also could earn legal permanent residence after six years.

• Adds up to 14,000 new Border Patrol agents by 2011 to the current force of 11,300 agents.

• Authorizes a "virtual wall" of unmanned vehicles, cameras and sensors to monitor the U.S.-Mexico border.

• Creates a special guest worker program for an estimated 1.5 million immigrant farm workers, who can also earn legal permanent residency.

• Allows illegal immigrant students with high school diplomas or GED, no criminal record and meet other criteria to enroll in college or university or enlist in the military. Permits state schools to charge such students in-state tuition.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's proposal:

• Requires all employers to verify the identity and immigration status of their employees through an electronic system.

• Assesses civil penalties of between $500 and $20,000 against employers for each illegal immigrant they hire and criminal penalties of up to $20,000 per illegal immigrant hired and up to six months in jail for engaging in a pattern of employing illegal workers.

• More than doubles the number of employment-based green cards, from 140,000 to 290,000, and makes more employment-based visas available to unskilled workers. It also would free up other visas by exempting immediate relatives of U.S. citizens from being counted in the annual pool of 480,000 visas, and increase country-by-country ceilings on family-sponsored and employment-based immigrants.

• Cancels visas of immigrants who have overstayed their visas and requires them to return to their home country to undergo additional screening at U.S. consulates.

• Makes it a misdemeanor crime for an immigrant to be in the country illegally.

• Increases the number of visas available for high-tech workers.

• Does not address President Bush's proposal for a guest-worker program.

House bill passed in December:

• Requires all employers to use within six years a database to verify Social Security numbers of employees or face civil or criminal penalties for hiring illegal workers.

• Requires mandatory detention for all non-Mexican illegal immigrants arrested at ports of entry or at land and sea borders.

• Establishes mandatory sentences for smuggling illegal immigrants and for re-entering the United States illegally after deportation.

• Makes illegal presence in the country a felony.

• Makes a drunken driving conviction a deportable offense.

• Requires building two-layer fences along 700 miles of the 2,000-mile border between Mexico and the United States.

• Does not address President Bush's proposed guest-worker program for illegal immigrants already in U.S.
