Unlocking Dell bios
My brother just got his first computer and bought a Dell demension 5100, anyway I gave him my old 6600 to replace the X300 which came with it and I want to know if there is anyway to unlock the dell bios for a little more speed with out getting the old screwdriver and sodder out. (Or atleast I thought that they still put in those admin password chips).

you could get the same quality of oem mobo with upgradable bios for probably around 50.00.then you could turn that dell into a real pc.atleast that is what i did with my old dim4400.later

No, I don't think there is any way to unlock a Dell. I had an 8400 that I wanted to OC but I searched for a few months and tried all sorts of software programs to OC, but nothing work work because it was a propritory mobo.
I got rid of the dell and built my current rig which I can OC... but I may have pushed it a lil too far last night :-(

you will not be able to find the same model number but dells boards are usually based off of another model.just look for the same chipset or better and the same onboard periferals to meet your needs.and hold on to the other board incase of a warranty issue you can just slap the dell board back in.make sure that any board you get will fit in your case and have good clearance for hs/f upgrades and memory and make sure that the power supply has enough cable length to reach your new board.i was able to find a board based on the same chipset that was almost identical to the one i took out of my dim 4400.your best bet would be an intel oem board because u already have all the accessories to outfit the board.make sure the board you get is not locked like your dell board.i heard somewhere that intel started locking down some lower end boards.you will have a hs/f for your cpu because dells use different retension brackets, atleast they did on the 4400.later

Why you'd buy a Dell with OC'ing or tweaking in mind is beyond me...you buy Dell's for backup machines (i.e. when you fry your good one from tweaking, OC'ing etc) when you want something that "just works"

Hasn't been in my experience, but then I've only used Dell machines through friends.
I have a few IBM machines around...those things refuse to die no matter what. They're pretty damn good.

if you want to OC a Dell you have to get one of the newer XPS machines. they are the only ones that have the BIOS unlocked.

Has anybody offered that good ol' hammer?
You could use a hammer to unlock your BIOS.

I wouldnt waste money on buying hardware just so you can overclock the system, I doubt you are going to get enough performance to justify the money spent. Use software to OC the card and the CPU, leave alone. If you need a faster machine build one, but I wouldn't try too much with the dell, they are not for OCing.

That and the fact that he'd need to replace near everything.
Proprietary power supplies, cases, mobos....blah blah blah..
