Sad Strangest OC problem ever...

Well, this is the short version:
PC is not stable while idle but perfect when loaded.

The long version:
I have an AMD64 3000+ on an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum, right now is OC to 2400Mhz (267 x 9) @ 1.375v + 10% = 1.5v (this MB dosn't let me play with the voltage too much unless I add the +% stuff, very confusing) and the memory is set to 166Mhz divider (PQI PC4000) @ 222Mhz 3-4-4-8-T1, Video card is an x800 Pro @ 513/533 with all 16 pipes activated in bios running in an Artic Cooler VGA Silencer 5, both video card and CPU using Artic Silver Ceramique.

The good thing: I can run Prime95 for 12 hours and no errors or problems, and that is doing 2 different tests, 1 for memory and 1 for CPU (24 hours stable total), I stopped both tests. Can run ANY game without problems, being it 12 hours of WoW or testing some other demos, never a crash or error.

The bad thing: As soon as the computer is idle for a few mins, that being only surfing the net, working on any programs, watching DVDs or any other type of video, I mean, anything that doesn't load the CPU at all, I usually get: FULL SYSTEM LOCKS, SYSTEM RESETS (no blue screen) or the system sound gets completely distorted (sounds like a lot of very high pitchs and scraches).

This is driving me nuts, I'm thinking the video card may be dying since "sometimes" I get a VPU recovery with 1 of those symptoms, but the display never recovers, stays frozzen. I have tried increasing the CPU voltage to 1.55, doesn't work, on the other hand, lock ups more often and get blue screens, also tried lowering the voltage, same thing, blue screens or other types of lockups. Tried changing any imaginable setting in bios, from mem voltage to AGP voltage, to timmings, to multipliers, to disable hardware, well, everything, no luck.

And before u suggest a windows re-install, defrag or any of that normal stuff, don't, I already tried all before and my PC is already optimized to the max.

Thanks for any input on this matter (specially if u already had the same problem and found a solution).

that is definately odd. Never heard of anything like that before. The only thing I think of trying is swapping to a different videocard, power supply.

Another indication I have that it may be a faulty video card is that most of the time the crash is followed by a terribly garbled screen or the monitor just turns off.

Well, a GeForce FX5600, that's it, but is on my wife's PC, so I don't think she will like the idea pretty much

Well I think it's worth trying... I steal my bros card from time to time too I think it's a good idea if you test it at least. I know tis a lot of work but at least you'll get some answers.

dood, im gettin the exact same thing right now, hopefully i can typ this out !!, i think its my DDR booster here, i hope its not MY X800XL, random lock ups and reboots while @ desktop,

i think MY DDR booster is fluctuating way too much , close to 0.1-0.3 volt sumtimes, this seems to only be the case after the CPU has been on for a while, can too much heat by the booster cause this iradicate voltages?? like now i booted and been on for like 20 mins, after being powered down all night, lastnight though, after an .exe error while playing NFSU2 i couldn't last 10 sec in windows b4 a reboot, i think its my VDIMM dippin to low? but wat causes it after a while and not constantly faulting???

wats yer experiance with the booster Tulk?? R u usin one Omega??

If you run Folding @ Home, or leave something to keep it busy all the time does it crash? I think it could be that you have a Power Saving driver enabled and it lowers the clockspeed and voltage too much on idle in order to save power, I saw that happen once.

If I run prime95 in the background while watching movies or working on the PC, it never crashes. As for any power saving stuff, I have all the power options in the CP disabled, so does Hybernation and any card that may "turn off" while idle to save power. The main problem is that it happens random, sometimes I can watch a DVD movie for 1.5 hours without a crash and sometimes it crashes just 3 mins after I start it, but if I run P95 in the background while watching it, all perfect.

How are temperatures?

Many boards throttle on load, and I'm wondering if the fans aren't throttling as they should without any load, and it's overheating on idle?

Sounds odd, but worth checking.

You might need to increase the speed of the artic cooler fan, Omega. The default settings are pretty weird. With mine, if the temps were above 42 C, the fan would run at less than 20%. I changed the settings to something more suitable via AtiTool. Hope this helps

Well, become a member of the Folding world and your problem will go away

But what I meant was do you have a PowerNow driver loaded for the proc?

The temps are always low on idle, so is not temp based, 33c for CPU and 34c for chipset, on load the CPU is up to 48c and chipset to 37-38c.

I have always set the fan since I bought it to 100% with Rivatuner.

How do I tell if I have PowerNow enabled? And most important, How do I disable it? The last driver I have for my CPU I downloaded from AMD and updated it. I really suspect that this many be the problem since I have tried everything.
Oh! and if mean "Cool'n Quiet", that is disabled in BIOS.

What are the temps on the video card?

Second thing... turn off reboot on error in windows. The option if you right click on my computer go to advanced. Then the startup settings.

Turn off reboot.

This way you will get the error before it reboots ( that is if it not a thermal event that the CPU or motherboard causes for the reboot)

hello omega - its been a while (since i switched to an nvidia card) that i have read anything of you

did you try to disable the b*ll*h*tt*ng nv/ati speed up thing?

-> bios "cell menu"
-> while holding shift+f2 you have to press alt+f3 (try it a few times - it is a little bit tricky to get the right timing)
-> you should see a "nv/ati speed up" tap, set it to "disabled"

and check another few things:
-> the hsf on the southbridge is a joke - there is way too less thermal compound between the hsf and the chip
-> be sure to use slots 1+2 (the nearest to the socket) for your ram as these are the more stable ones.
-> this board tightens some alpha timings when you change the memclock to 166 or lower. the result is a much lower oc. this has been fixed by a few bios modders (ask me if you want the links).

Its a driver like a video driver, for the proc, like you updated.... you'd need the stock K8 driver.
