Toasty Laptop overclocking
Well im going to be reviewing an alienware laptop shortly but for the few people who read this lil forum section ill post an interesting lil snippet.
The alienware laptop has a 3.6ghz prescott, which as you would expect needs some serious cooling, anyway without going into too many details I was poking around the cpuz site and decided to check out the old trusty clockgen http://www.cpuid.com/clockgen.php
Finding a clockgen for a 915 mobo, the asus P5GD2 CG-ICS954119, I installed, and low and behold free fsb ocing.
I havent played much with it yet as of course you are stuck with default voltages so another 100mhz might be possible, but after careful monitoring of temperatures and stability tests, I hit 3.8ghz without any issue, temps didnt rise at all according to my monitoring software. Overclocking with a laptop is not something I recommend as a rule but for curiousity sake it proved most interesting.
Ill not post all the information just yet and you will have to wait for the review shortly.

flip it over and fry up some eggs...
i held on cheap laptop..... damn, the bottom was so toasty it shocked me enough to figure i was being burned....
course i wouldn't expect every laptop to be that way.... and alienware shouldn't produce that kind of results i would think...
nice OC though

That's the problem I feel with laptops, almost no portablity if your searching for a desktop replacement... I'm sure a new batterysource can be created to make this beasts run longer!

the thing is, even if you had new battery technology the desktop replacements are too large to really use on your "lap" anyway! for plane, bus or train use they are impractical and they are too bulky to carry around on a daily basis.
Certainly its possible to take them for example with you on vacations, and keep them in a hotel room as your entertainment system and they are hard to beat for that, but for general portability a less powerful system with limited gaming capabilities is a wiser move.
However ive fallen in love with this system, its the best laptop ive used!
