Athon 64 Winchesters (939) -- Best air o/c?

I'm about to start overclocking my Athlon 3000+, using only the stock cooler. I've read that I should be able to put an extra 200mhz onboard w/ no second though, and potentially hit 400-500mhz increase ON AIR w/ STOCK HEATSINK.

Just wondering what other people's experiences have been w/ stock equipment? Winchesters apparently are much more o/c friendly than Newcastles or Clawhammers.

The winchesters run cool so you should have no problem getting to 2.2-2.3 ghz on stock. What is your idle/load temp.

I'm @ 30C idle, and 40C playing counterstrike source. Prime 95 on "blend" only gets me to 33C, so I'm thinking my 9700 pro is running quite hot.

I think I'll buy a case fan before I start overclocking for real. I also haven't hooked up my powersupply fan-control to the front of my case so I'll do that too before I messing w/ my settings.

What are the best CPU-benchmarking programs available? I downloaded PCMark but it doesn't provide me with an Orb score (I guess I have to pay $) unlike the 3dmark programs. I have Sandra 2005 but it doesn't give me an overall # score. I've heard about SuperPi, I use Prime95 for stress testing...any other ideas?

pc mark should give your an orb score, it doesn't when one of the tests fails. you may want to watch it carefully and see what is going on.

i use the valve stress test as a cpu benchmark, crank it down to 640x480 w/ all low settings and see what happens.

also, the newer winchesters aren't nearly as good as older ones.

mine can hit 2.6 at this point, but it's not completely stable, i'm hoping once it burns in a little more i'll be able to push it further.

A friend of mine has a Winchester 3000+. He's had for a while and I ask if I could take it for a spin.

Well, within 2 weeks I had overclocked it from a 3000+ to something along the lines of a 4000+ (I figured that since there's extra memory bandwidth and a tad more CPU speed)

CPU: 275 x 9 = 2475 (1.45v)
HTT: 275 x 3 = 825 (+0.1v)
Memory: OCZ Performance PC3200 at 230Mhz (2.5-3-3-6)(+0.2v)

Temps with the stock HSF:
Idle: 29Cs
Load: 48Cs

Althought I think this little core has more in it than just that, I don't believe the board is suitable for higher HTT speeds (Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra-939). I don't really imagine it going over 300MHz x 3...

Cheers!

i've taken mine up to 240x11 (2.64Ghz) but it wasn't quite stable. my "normal" aka everyday use OC is around 2.4Ghz or 222x11

bananaman will become famous soon enoughbananaman will become famous soon enough

when i was on stock cooler waiting for my water block i had my winnie to about 2.4GHz - it was slightly unstable, i then saw that my old mobo was quite seriously undervolting - it then hit 2.4 easy on stock cooling and stock V, solid as a rock.

Uber try and grab some TCCD ram if ya can. Lower latency stuff like BH5 and UTT is nice, but with the 3000+s 9x multi it's best to shoot for some high fsb 2.5-3-3-7 action. I reccomend, if you have the money, to go buy a 2x512mb set of G.Skill LE. These ram is guarenteed to run 2.5-3-3-7 @ 275 with low voltage. Also with 2.5-3-3-7 some users have gotten up to 300 and if you loosen the timings to 2.5-4-3-7 many people get up into the 350. Provided you winnie isn't one of the newer week 50 ones and you decent cooling and voltage options you shoul dbe able to get a very nice OC out of it. Eh just noticed ur mobo the asus a8v bleh
