Quieting My Computer

I've decided to not go with watercooling and quiet my computer the traditional way with fans. I'll rebuy the silent boost (it worked fine for 1.5 years before now). I'm also buying a new 80mm fan for the back of my case, rubber thingies for the back fan and cpu, and a vga silencer.

Quick question, which silencer do I buy for my sapphire radeon 9800 pro (128mb)? It looks like I buy the arctic cooling vga silencer 1, but the others look bigger and better if they fit too.

rubber washers don't really do anything at all. They sell them because they know people will want to buy them. If you're looking for quiet fans then i suggest you get the Vantec Stealth fans. Really quiet fans. If you have any 120mm fan bays, i suggest you get one there as well.

he speaks the truth. my antec case came with them. i replaced them with screws when i changed fans. I notice no more vibrations.

I'm already going with vantec stealth fans (I love them). The plastic things I'm talking about actually do work, they're not just washers.

The fan still makes the same noise
but it reduces the sound and vibration tranmited to / thew the case
it does help... just not verry much.. so little its not worth the effort your right about that

To really have an effec you'd have to use a soft plastic or rubber scew

and that just doesnt work

Or you could line the inside of your case with sound dampening material....
thats the most effective way...

The beantech igloo8 takes an interesting approach to mounting the hard drives. The screws go right into the drive, but the hole in the case for the screw is completely filled with rubber on both ends and through the middle (think a dumbell). the screws end up touching nothing but rubber and it works nicely.

I used to buy Vantec Stealths for the longest time, and I was always impressed by them. About a year ago I managed to get a couple SilenX 80mm fans for a customer of mine from my buddies that own a shop near me (Bigfoot Computers). As soon as I fired them up I decided my customer was getting my Vantecs, and I was gonna keep SilenXs for myself! These puppies push more air than the Vantecs (28CFM vs Vantecs 27CFM) , and run quiter too even though they are faster than Vantecs (14dBA vs Vantecs 20dBA, and 2200RPMs vs Vantecs 2050RPMs). As an added bonus they ship them with rubber gaskets too. The 80mm fans go as low 1400RPM, and put out only 9dBA of noise. The cost about $4 more than the Stealths, but they are damn worth it.

You can get a look at the 80mm, 2200RPM on here: HERE from BigfootComputers. I have yet to find a fan better than these.

As a side note, if you really want to quiet that case down then I would look into other options like sound deadener (sound proofing). The stuff they make for PCs are very thin, and don't do as much as it should, but when you add that to every things else.. it helps a lot.

I buy all my cooling stuff from frozencpu.com because they do an awesome job on custom cabling. Every power cord in my computer is green wrapped with black heatshrink. If they ever cary those silenx fans though, I'll be sure to pick some up (I may even email them and ask them to carry them).

I have a window on the side of my pc so i want to avoid sound deadening stuff because aesthetically my computer is beautiful.

but yea...those silicon gaskets for the fans/PSU seem like a rip off to me as well..I have a Vantec Stealth PSU, and it's silent already

I got around to putting in the vantec stealth and ati silencer today. Both are real nice; silencer let me up my 9800 pro oc and lowered overall case temperature. I haven't put in my new silent boost yet, the old one seems to be stuck.
