Well if you're going to go to the trouble of posting at THE premier hardware site about it than my answer would have to be a great, big "DUH!".

Let us know how it goes, and get yourself some thermal probes to have some REAL fun with that puppy.

It comes with one for the CPU, eh.......I'm lazy I haven't felt like installing it yet...

Maybe later................Oh question.......It came with that sh|tty thermal paste........I bought some Arctic Silver III online and I should get it within the next week.......Should I install it with the crappy paste and rip it off within the next week and reinstall it with AS III?

Default Post "crappy paste"?!?

You wouldn't by chance be referring to that lil old squeeze tube of white silicone heatsink paste, would you? 'Cause some of us actually prefer it to AS3, it's lack of conductivity is a VERY "big plus" in my book!

I think if you check the AMD board you'll find that AMD does NOT recommend ASIII ! IIRC, they recommend Thermogard(?) silicone based compound.

I'll see if I can find the post that had a technicans email to an AMD stockholder on the ? if you can't find it.

There is an ASIII ceramic *epoxy* that is touted as being non-conductive > but you'll never get it back off because it is an epoxy.

HTH,

Default Post White crap

Well, now I used the white crap until my ASIII comes......I never read about athlons not being able to use ASIII.......well, the new fan runs niiiiice.......my old 60mm ran 5000rpm and wasn't too loud, i have the volcano 9 running at 2636 rpm and it's hella quieter than the 60mm and hella colder too !!!! what a nice fan..........and a good price......I got it for 18$

As far as putting it on.......The clamp was too tight for the cpu.....so i had to bend it looser.....but i scared the sh|t out of myself when i first tried to mount it i thought that I cracked the core.... .... but i didn't but nonetheless.......www.monarchcomputers.com..... that's where i got the fan......dirt cheap 18$.......nice site with quality components.....i suggest looking into it

as far as Arctic Silver 3 on an Athlon.....I'll look into it.....and if anyone else has heard about it someone fill me in......thanks

Sorry. Dig like white paste for heatsink! Dig no like silver paste for heatsink! Silver paste carry electricity, get TINY bit of silver paste on little wires near heatsink & kiss 'puter bye-bye. White paste no carry electricity, get lots of white paste all over wires and it no problem.

Also, I stay the hell AWAY from any type of epoxy to mount thermal stuff! Epoxy is great, unless you make a mistake or change your mind. (Both of which I'm prone to do.)

I'm into the white silicon thermal paste with little dabs of superglue on the corners for holding purposes. It does a good job, it holds well, and it's easy to pop-off if'n you change your mind.

i was thinkin of getting AS3 for my system too but the guy who i got my heatsink from said that the AS3 barely makes a difference... i would have been willing to pay the extra price... but when a salesman tells me it ain't necessary for me to put out the extra money i believe it. it's not a very good idea to use arctic adhesive beacuse you'll end up having to stick your card in the freezer to get it off... not at all fun... did you see that pic on Hardocp earlier on this year of the GF4Ti4600 missing the ram... this someone tried to replace teh ramsinks on the card to improve clocks but wrecked the whole card in teh process... instead of getting 2% better performance he/she got no performance... must've been kicking himself after that.

Default Post salespersons

Never EVER listen to a salesperson, especially in Bestbuy or Circuit City, they don't know anything.....except how to sucker someone into buying a system that you can build yourself for close to half the price......They don't know squat. Now ideally, the only place that I'd actually listen to someone's opinion is in a small eletronics or small computer store...Cuz those people are usually nit picky and care about small things like this.

I just had an arrgument with my friend about prices, componnents and stuff, eventualy (he doesent know sh|t ) I lost my nerves and told him that I won't help him buy a comp. He called me today saing that I MUST help him because the sale's man replied to his question which was: "could you put in r9000 insted of mx440 ?" replay was "OH! But you don't need radeon 9000, it just an add-on to a GeF for digital playback !!! " )))))))))))))))))))). But that sale's man has better prices than mine (later proven to be higher) so I still let him buy from him )) nasty one

I dont see whats the big deal with thoese fancy new coolers, volcanos and S*** , I got my 60cm, doublle ball-bearing 4800rpm which I used for cooling duron 600 (spit fire OC-ed at 900 ) took my XP 1800, applyed that nice white non-conductive paste (that I also love the most) tightened the heatsink (to a LOT of cooling paste), made sure it doesent move at all, closed everithing, turned on and it runs for hours not exceding over 49 (OC-ed 1800 at 2000/FSB 147). Everything fine (loud though, but considering the rest of fans on PSU's, caseing...hmm). The best thing I saw and tought of buying was a wide heatsink with 2 double bearing 6000(something)mounted one next to eachother, it's loud, it's BIG, powerfull !! WOOOAAA I LIKE IT !!!! )) but was some 40$ so I decided I don't need them.

oh, and I forgot; What is the acctual point of posting the tread "I got this new super heatsink (and you don't have one) should I install it ? (in this part he is trying to make us jellus, don't you ? ).

You should wrotte the tread post like this:

Hey I got this Volcano 9, it's great, and you are all to be jellus, now good bye.

excuse my english if something is wrong or miss-spelled. I am sorry kid (you are kid aren't you ? you sound like one for sure), really am, if I offended you, but whats the point ????

When I was reading the tread I tought you need some help installing or something and wanted to help, but when I saw what it was I was dissapointed (and dis-pointed)

Sorry if ya' all consider this "spam" , I dont mean it to be.

Default Post JEALOUS

No offense, but that's is how it is spelled.....Nah, here's the deal.....I'm not a big computer freak....No offense but I do plenty of other things besides computers....I was just curious as to how many people would reply and get all excited over this. The deal is, I used to have a 60mm fan and a cheap aluminum heatsink on my Thunderbird (this thing runs extremely hot (all Thunderbirds do)). The fan was alright....I loaded up the Volcano 9 (which I purchased dirt cheap online...$18) (I only bought it cuz I had some money laying around and I play to install it on an XP once I buy one) Well none the less....This fan is killer.....it dropped my temps degrees celcius....And that's only running at 2500rpms, vs. a 60mm fan running at 5000rpm. Well none the less I think that this fan is a great cheap investment.

No I was not trying to get anyone jealous, I just knew that someone would respond in a way that you knew he actually cared that I bought it....Ya know? Well nonetheless.....I'm out.

Default Post 5 degrees celcius

forgot to put the number "5" in there....

the fan dropped my temps 5 degrees celcius and it only is running at 2500 rpm.

just a couple things that id seen in other threads.....like the one where you gave the guy the sarcastic instructions about putting his FSB down to 0 and doing things that could harm his computer.....he was simply asking for help learning new things....how would you feel if when you asked a teacher as a child about gravity if they had told you to climb and building and leap off

I think that was verry funny !!! I must try setting my FSB to 0 !!! It's crutiall !!!

Anyway, I didn't sad a thing that he could do and damage comp. The options I told him to set, cannot be set !!! So my soul is calm......
That fella' just needs to run through his mobo manual and all his questions will be answered !!! Then he should ask questions that make sens, and he we'll be helped ! Don't you think Agent Smit ?

back to that part about not trusting the idiot salesman... that depends on who the salesman is... if the salesman is the idiot they pay 5 bucks an hour to at wall-mart, you should forget about it... if he's the person you just saw ocing a p4 2,53ghz to just to 4ghz then i think i ought to believe him instead of you. in this case he was the second one... you see, how shall i put this... all paste is crap... you get better heat transfer if it's jut the copper heatsink on the processor.... it's just that the copper heatsink ain't competely flat and nor is the processor... and that's where the paste comes in... you need the paste to make maximum contact between the two... keep in mind that you should use as little paste as possible... now the cheap stuff is designed for maximum heat transfer... paste is like the suspension of a car... you can't do without it but the difference between the best stuff and the stuff they put in in average cars is barely anything in normal use...

different materials have different heat absorption and dissapation rates.

so actually different thermal compounds will result in different results

personally i buy rear defogger repair kits that contain copper.....then i mix that copper with arctic silver 3. so that way it does have copper in it to aid in thermal conductance. i just have to be very very careful when putting on my HSF

thats how i get my cpu to perform the way it does

unfortunately for me though this 2200+ will just not hit 2.0Ghz so 1.9 has to do for me.
