Name your favorite P4....
For OC'ing. I am sure to draw a couple of "None of them" in this thread..
When I bought the P4 2.4B I have now, I was limited by the FSB speed of my old mobo. I have since replaced that mobo with one that can accommodate the 800 MHz FSB and have thought about getting a little faster processor. When I decided to purchase the 2.4B eveyone said that the it was a great little OC'er. Only thing is, it's a 533MHz and not and 800MHz. Soooo tell me what you are thinking...and I am not wanting to spend 500 bucks on one either.

the 2.8 or 3.2 P4s are nice OC'ers. i'm not much of a Intel fan but i'm sure they are good

Any gallatin core.
EDIT: just saw you are asking to get one for overclocking and under 500.... so ignore that above.
Personally id pick up a 2.8 or 3.0 P4 Northwood and overclock the hell out of it. well within your budget and much lower temps than any of the E's (prescotts).

the 2.4c's are great, very good value too, only problem is for a little more outlay you are almost certainly guaranteed with a 3.0c an overclock of at least 600mhz with decent air cooling, very few 2.4s will hit 3.6ghz unless you have some seriously high end vapo cooling and then you would already want a 3.2 or 3.4 to get it past 4 ghz without too much effort. I guess we should go into stepping information in this thread, but Im not sure if thats overboard for the thread starter.

definately a northwood core, and I'd also say it depends on what northbbridge you have. WHat mainboard are you using for this project? If it is a 875p board...you can probably overclock the chip untill it catches fire

Check the sig for system specs, however not sure how dated those benchies are. I am planning on cleaning and re-benching tomorrow so they should be updated mid-afternoon. Stepping info would be great, the more info the better when I purchased my 2.4B (limited FSB with my old MOBO) they even told me where the one I bought should have been made at. I used to frequent these boards often a yr or so back, since then I have kind of fallen off but thanks to a new job $$ I am trying to get back into the game. I have pretty good air cooling on it, and I am not ready to make the jump to liquid cooling yet.

I didn't forget about this thread, I would be greatly appreciative if you all could through me some stepping info and specifics on the CPU's. Prescott/Northwood/0.13 0.09 micron/3.0C 3.0E/cache levels... yikes!

An SLK-900U used to be one of the top of the line full copper P4 heatsinks, that I have paired with a 120mm fan. At this point in time, i never get over 46C under full load. I have a Vantec tornado if I ever have to break that beast out to cool down whatever I get.
My ram on the other hand, yes it will need to be changed out too. But now that I have the actual power for these pieces to run off of, I am thinking a new proc with hyperthreading first and then memory in another couple of weeks.

The 2.8 or 3.0 would be the best bang for the buck now. It has a low enough multiplier that you can crank the FSB. I got a 3.2, and it tops out at around 3.8 (237fsb).
