Extreme edition @ 3.8ghz 1009fsb with ASUS STAR ICE cooler
well ive been playing with some overclocking on the asus star ice cooler and im damned surprised just how good this is. its in the thermalright SLK zone (I have reviewed it as some of you will know, but the more I use it the more impressed I am).
here it is at 3.8ghz at 1.7 volts (the max I like to stick with on air cooling for safety), compared with a prescott at 4ghz in sandra.
gallatin cores are hard to beat I can hit higher but I like a high FSB and with an engineering sample from intel ive hit 1080fsb at lower clocks This ASUS mobo hits over 270fsb but the raptors dont like anything over 258fsb........

The only problem is the price of the extreme editions, they are more expensive than even the FX chips, but honestly I love them. ive an FX chip here and its wonderful but the Extreme editions are my favourite processor. so much fun to OC as well.
I dont really like the prescotts, too hot.

LOL. thats my downfall. i have a A64 3200+ and can only get to 2.3GHZ. even with a XP-120 cooler on it. i feel if intel dropped the price on the EE's they would make more money. maybe around $900 instead of over $1000.

well I know a lot of the members will disagree, but an EE is a great move IMO. just get yourself a good cooler for it as well.

I got a GREAT one... A gigabyte 3d cooler GT Ultra which cools very well IMO. On lowest settings it's inaudible and cools my overclocked northwooed fine... Just gotta turn up the rpm if it's with a prob... I just hope the prices drop a bit

Zardon I know this is alittle off topic but lots of people talk about "smoking fast ram" and I have to wonder...should I have faster ram? I have Geil 3200 ram at real nice tight timings and it seems great...but I dont get the benchmarks I think I should in Sandra.
maybe its cause im running an Athlon 2800+

3200 at tight timings for an AMD 2800+ is perfectly fine, if you go to a higher "numbered" ram the timings will get looser and you wont be able to take advantage of the additional speeds via fsb anyway so its pointless. The TBs dont put out great memory scores, the bartons are higher due to the extra 256k of on chip level 2 cache.

I have a barton. i didnt think that they made 2800+ tbred cores. interesting..
anyway yeah I got the barton. The scores are alright I guess but not what I would have expected...especially out of the nforce2 which is supposedly the fastest Socket A platform.

I replaced the raptors with a maxtor 16 meg cache drive (250 gig), and I got the fsb up from 1000-1010 to 1080 (270fsb).

Raptors are known to have issues with high FSBs, they "vanish" on boot up.

I dont think the EE series CPUs price will ever come down, they're just too expensive to produce. They're more likely to be phased out than see a sharp price decline.

very nice
@ 272 (1088) ITS SO NICE!!!
I was thinking about getting raptors but then that means I could not run at this speed. bummer, I was enjoying 3.8 ghz a lot. Very nice clocks, and overall looks like a nice chip, too pricey for me though. If i got something other than stock cooling would I be able to push my chip more, or do you think maybe it is maxed out @ 3.8ghz @ 272 FSB?
