A64 turbo mode?

i have been testing my A64 3200+ clawhammer overclocks. when i use turbo mode in the bios i get about 3C difference in temps. in normal mode the temp is 38C. when in turbo mode my temps are 41C. what causes the temp to change when in turbo mode? what is being used more in turbo mode than normal mode?

Specs:
A64 1MB clawhammer CO stepping
MSI K8Y neo FSR
1GB 2x512 samsung DDR400
2 WD 36.7GB raptors RAID 0
MSI mx 400 32MB
Antec 550w true PSU

I always thought it was more aggressive use of memory, myself. but I could certainly be wrong.

how much difference are you seeing from it in benchmarks? (assuming you don't notice a difference in real life)

Basically with the A64, its suppose to shut down parts that its not using and activate them when they are needed. Its a great system cause it keeps the temps down and yadda yadda...unfortunatly theres a bit of lag when those parts activate. Now supposedly everyone is saying that it isnt implemented but I've seen it at work before in laptops and desktops alike(mostly on laptops though). Basically turbo mode doesnt allow anything to shut off. It keeps the entire processor running.

Thats simply from what I remember. I could very well be wrong. I'm pretty sure thats the case though.

that sounds like what the cool and quiet mode is for, it underclocks the cpu and turns off alot of features when there not needed. when the cpu's completly idle, it underclocks its self to like 800mghz, it runs alot cooler and is supposed to last alot longer. i think the turbo is for something else other then keeping everything running on cpu.

yeah, that sounds like a description of Cool n Quiet, except that Cool n Quiet does not "turn off features", it only uses a reduced voltage and clockspeed multiplier when the CPU is not above a certain % usage (80% or something, not sure).

drake, can you download CPU-Z and run it both with Turbo and without for me?
write down the core speed, HTT, votlage, and on the Memory tab, the speed and timings, in both cases.
please let me know, thanks.

did you check it with CPU-Z yet?
when I set my Performance Mode option in BIOS to Turbo, these are the differences I see:

Mode ..... Auto ..... Turbo

voltage .. 1.50v .... 1.55v
speed .... 2000 ..... 2052
HTT ...... 200 ...... 228
multi. ... 10 ....... 9

that's on my ASUS K8V with A64-3000
and would definitely cause a temp increase.
I wonder if your motherboard does the same thing?
