Blowhole the monitor

I know Dig has done it, but who else has Dremel'd a blowhole in the top of their monitor(s) & installed a fan to suck all that hot air out? I got a 80mm in mine.

'Sinks on your flatpanel ??? j/k

i did after i seen a nut case do it to his and just cust tape it in there but i took my time and did it right i might replace my fan with one of those new antecs led fans

Why would you want to put a blowhole in your moniter?

You can't overclock moniters.... can you?

Well, you can oc a monitor allowing it to do refresh rates higher than stock > but I wouldn't recommend it nor do it. Those few that have done it have said not to also > it decreases the life on the monitor significantly!

Why did I 'blowhole' mine? To increase the life of it by getting all that heat out. I have my monitor on all my waking hours (sometimes 24+) & the vents on top aren't very good, IMO. I was noticing the sides of the picture would get wavy after long hours of use.

Now that I have the blowhole/fan on top to draw cool air in the sides & bottom of the monitor & release all that pent up heat > it doesn't do it.

If I turn the fan off & then put my hand over the hole after ~6 hours use > the amount of heat is amazing, IMO.

The 80 mm fan is cheap insurance & can't hurt.

I've done it just cause I thought it would be cool and it can extend your monitors life-span. It was actually very easy.

Thanks. Sorry no pics, but it's nothing really. I just cut a hole a little smaller than the 80mm fan so it won't fall in & set it over the hole. I did put little pads, made out of the soft cloth side of velcro strips, on each corner to eliminate the plastic to plastic vibration rattle that was there.

Question:

I know we live to mod ect. but...

Does a monitor really need a blowhole/fan ???

Has anyone actually seen a monitor come with one (from the factory)

What is the gain in this delicate operation ?

I read the above comments but dont be fooled my friends.
No mater what you do the tube itself is what actually maters and heat isnt the issue
in this mater but uptime.

Ok i see some parts like resistors/transistors/capacitors heating up and losing lifetime but all that can be replaced if needed .
In the case of the tube....well if that goes we buy a new monitor as the repair cost isnt worth it.

My recomendation:
If not viewing the screen (in case of it being a server/or overnight downloads etc.)
simply ..TURN IT OFF.
And to further protect it ....put it through a UPS(in Europe especially we lose alot of monitors dew to bad power surges/brown outs etc).

In most cases we dont really use a monitor for more than about 3-5 years so im sure we are way below the predicted life span .

And a Caution note to the ones going to attempt this.

1) If your not absolutly sure about what your gonna do ...dont do it.
2) inside a monitor we have some very high voltage capacitors( very painfull shock )
3) dont touch anything out of curiousity cause reconfiguring a monitors geometry etc. isnt an easy task without proper tools.

So your saying that you didnt even open it ???
What happened to all the plastic shreds..did they just fall in??
That stuff is gonna melt if it goes into ..lets say the PSU and cause stuff to overheat !!

One more thing:

I hope you guys realise that moters/fans etc. emmit a magnetic field that has
a negetive effect on a screens geometry.
So be carefull NOT to use a very large one as it will warp your geometry.

I laid the monitor on it's side to prevent the chips from falling in.

Lot easier than opening the case up & risking shock from 'loaded' capacitors. I also use a surge protector (USA here) doesn't everyone?

It's an 80mm case fan > magnetically shielded like all case fans.

PS: Maybe you replace the monitor every 3-5yrs, but mine is 7yrs old & still going strong.

BTW: I'm not advocating anyone to do this, I merely asked if anyone else had & then replied (when asked) why [SIZE=large]I[/size] chose to do it.

I just stuck a fan up there and laid it on top of the vents. Contrary to popular opinion, I try not to cut things up unless I have to. (BTW-They DO sell an aftermarket product for cooling monitors, I'll hunt up the link.)

Trust us its cheaper to spend @ 10 bucks on a fan and install it yourself, hell I have @ 2 dozen fans just laying around from old pc's any of those would even work. Price cost = nothing!!!
