How far can I OC a Prescott 2.8E proc??

Hello all,

I just went out and bought a 2.8E Prescott CPU. I was originally going to buy the 800MHz Northwood version but the difference in price was only $10.00 so I bought the Prescott instead.

Anyways, I wanted to know if anyone else out there has this CPU and I wanted to know how far you guys have been able to OC this thing. The rest of my system spec is in my sig.

For your reference, my computer is being watercooled by the Koolance Exos kit with the 200-G CPU waterblock. At the moment, the temp is reading 28 C at the non-OC'ed setting.

I also have a GPU waterblock which receives the water before it travels on to the CPU block.

My memory is decent and they both have copper heatspreaders on them with an additional fan blowing air to them.

I have 2 fans in the front--one 80mm and one 120mm.

I have 2 fans in the back--both 80mm.

I have a clear-side panel with one 80mm fan.

My PSU has two fans--one heading out and one thats sucks the air in from the inside of the case.

So, what do you guys think? The memory has been used before in my previous system and they can take the OC increases fine.

Let's hear your feedback!!

I heard prescottts run REAL hot. One of the reviews i read said the motherboard started to melt when they were doing a max overclock test. I dont use watercooling so im not sure about yours. but my northwood 2.53 at stock with stock cooler idles at 28 and at max load about 34-35.

my 2.4 @ 2.8 is 29 idle on air.... I also have heard bad newsa bout prescotts and heat... As of watercooling i dont know much about, but just be warned to keep a very close eye on temps... If you can probe it... andd see readings vs what your temp monitor says.

with decent watercooling and case cooling, the processor will be safe enough, the prescotts can handle the extra 10c or so over the equivalent northwood, its when you up the core voltages you need to be careful. I would certainly keep a close eye on it when overclocking. ive known guys to hit 4ghz on 2.8s on water with not a large core voltage increase. very overclockable processor.

Cool, thx for the feedbacks.

Currently, I have the CPU at 3.22GHZ with a FSB of 230MHz. The VCore is at 1.5V as I read online that v1.5 is the ideal setting for FSB of that speed.

I've tried to go higher but my WinXP won't boot.

I guess I was being too greedy. Man, I love the fact that I saved so much money though. The 3.2C P4 is going for $288(US) before tax and I ended up paying $145(US). Actually, it cost me $215 after tax but my friend bought off my old proc for $70.

I dont' know if this is safe but I'm currently using a program called CPUMSR to disable the thermal throttling mechanism present in the Prescott. Since thermal throttling will automatically reduce the speed of the CPU (and decrease performance by using "dead" cycles) when it surpasses a certain temp point, I turned it off.

Do you think it's OK as long as my watercooling block holds up? The highest temp I've reached at this speed is 36 C. However, since the thermal probe is located kind of far from the CPU itself, I'm guessing my real temp is about 7-10 C higher.

Still, that's ok, right?

those temps are fine, yes. you should be able to safely go more on the voltage for higher clocks. 1.55-1.6 volts with watercooling.

Z your so smartttt! When i get watercooling in the far future I'd definitely appreciate your advice.

Whats ur temps @ ur new speed... I am sure u can go higher... I'd guess your ram is all that is holding u back even though i dont think it should that much... you try booting at maybe 5:4 instead of 1:1? You can prolly tweak your processer higher by tweaking your ratios

Here's an update.

I'm currently OC'ed to 3.41GHZ from stock speed of 2.8GHZ. My CPU-200G thermal probe tells me the temp is 29 C. Weird thing is that this temp is lower than when the clock speed was at 3.22GHZ! I'm guessing it has to do with draining and replacing of the liquid coolant.

The CPU voltage is 1.6V (the highest my mobo will allow me) and the VMmem is 2.8V. It does support up to 2.9V but I don't want to risk the higher heat output.

So far, the computer is stable and I hope I can keep this up even during summer time.
