CPU Multiplier ??
I am new to overclocking and have a question regarding determaning what my default CPU clock multiplier is. I know some AMD processor clock multipliers are locked, i would like to see if mine is or is not. I ran AIDA 32 and it says i have an AMD Athlon XP 2133MHz (8x267) 2600+. My bois is set to default and have settings from 12 to 19 in .5 increments

to check whether it is locked or not, turn off the pc, take off the HSF, have a look at the stepping code - aqxfa or something and the 034 (for a week 34 barton) if it is after week 39 it may be locked, but my 34 is locked grr

Short of removing the HFS, can i just change the multiplier in my bios and if it works this should indicate if it is locked or not. Removing my HFS is a pain, i have to remove the PSU to unlatch it

good point… if the multiplier changes in the bios, but a program like easytune (for gigabyte m/bs) shows the multiplier as what it was, then you have a locked chip

you can unlock it (turn it into a mobile chip) but given you have an nForce chipset then your probably out of luck as these don't respond well to multiplier changing in windows. I don't know if it allows you to change at the BIOS stage.

So it's locked then.
You need to unlock it
Use google to search for CPUMSR then look at all the pages on there (specifically the tweaks section)
you'll need to put a dab of silver pen/paint into a bridge (second in of L5) to convert it into a mobile CPU.
You'll then get 11x max muliplier still
To increase this you need to go alter L6 multipliers by cutting all the bridges (sharp pointed knife will do). You can do only a few bridges but you get lowe max multipliers (I only did two as I don't need anything more than 12.5x)
I use a KT600 chipset, it may or maynot work for you.
(or flog it and by an actual AthlonXP-M 2600+ but it's not as much of a challenge)

WHAT ?
Are you completely insane....
Either your young and not paying for this or you really do not understand
Spending £150+ on some better ram just to get up to 165MHz increase in speed is not what i'd call economic!
Spending ~£80 on an AthlonXP-M 2600+ and setting it to 200MHz FSB and setting the muliplier to 12x is a lot cheaper, not to mention you could probably go past that.
I still would not call it sensible for the small increase your going to get.
Waiting a bit, saving the money and then buying an A64 s939 motherboard and CPU is a much better option.
Or buy yourself a better keyboard and mouse or even monitor, graphics card if yours isn't to good or a nice modern harddrive.
some people really do need to get a grip on things.

what ram is it.
your either not providing enough Volts or your running far to low timings on it.
If it's not working as advertised i'd send it back to get it replaced.
Have you looked at RAM prices lately, they have increased quite a bit in the past month or so.
By a better soundcard would be where my money would go, (given you seem into the music).
