Default Post **GUIDE to removing the IHS on the p4 (2 parts) **

PART I
well i want to say one thing..i removed over 6 IHS's from both northwoods and willy's it make no diff. Also to note it gave me a 4C drop.. just please be careful my DHians's

i want to warn you all do not go fast...just slide the razor and dont hit the core..PLEASE DO NOT RUSH!!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

When you do this you want to keep the blade flat. If it is not flat you will possibly cut some traces and ruin the chip. Start at one corner as I have shown below and simply push in but not too far cause if you do you may hit the core and that would not be good. Do this at every corner and with this motion kinda push it in to the middle of the IHS. After this is done at every corner then simply lift off the IHS without turning it cause if you turn it too far in one direction it may hit the core and chip a corner. I think my experience in the end has been that it reduces load temps by 2~4 deg. C depending on vcore. My personal advice after using 4 of these chips is that you want to have Copper next to the small core as it's thermal conducting abilities are much better than Aluminum. These small cores are pushing alot of watts when OC'd for their size and you really should have copper next to the core.

and some more

if you are worried about crushing the core..(which you shouldn't be....just take it slow please)
i have another small guide on making a homemade shim...

you need just masking tape and a razor to cut the tape..

just keep building up until you get something like this

thank you for taking the time to read this.. i wish you the best of luck mates...ohh and for those who dont want to take of the IHS might i consider you to lap the IHS smooth.. BTW for those who think the IHS isn't copper your wrong.. the IHS is all copper with nickle plating for errosion..
heres a pic

Sounds fun. How thick is the heat spreader though? If you ran the cores without one, i'm sure it's all right, but i was wondering how much the heatsink would be lowered due to this. (probably 1mm or less.. but still)
