Overclocking a Laptop CPU
Do you use a program or do you have to rip it apart and play with jumpers?

Most don't overclock at all. No options whatsoever.
Some older laptops POSSIBLY have a jumper for 100/133 bus speed.

The problem is mostly heat-related. Laptops are notorioiusly tight on heat control issues.

DONT OVERCLOCK ANYTHING IN A LAPTOP YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! I used to build and support and dell laptops for furtune500 companies and trust me laptops are completly diffrent beasts than desktops I have seen the strangest things happen. You start overclocking that thing and I guarantee that something will go out in that laptop within 6 months and trust me replacing anything on a laptop costs a furtune, try paying between $800-$1200 to get a lcd replaced and $500-$1000 to get the motherboard replaced.

I have a friend that just had to pay $1200 for a 15" lcd replacement, it depends on the display and if they still make them or not.

Assuming it's a modern Laptop most use a the smae connection type so most comon displays of the same size will still work. It doen't have to be an original one.
Either the £:$ has changed far more than I remeber or your getting ripped off.

Well I work for a major retail store in the corp. offices and we use IBM laptops. The motherboard on a A31 Laptop is $800!!! No that is not an inflated cost either.... why is it so much?? Everything is built right onto the MB. Video, sound, NIC, Modem. Yes some brands of Laptops may have cheaper MB's but not many. The Gateways I have worked on cost us $600 for the motherboard. I totally agree with Blade. Don't monkey with laptops unless you have the $$ to pay for the new parts but personally just buy a faster Laptop if your current one isn't fast enough.
Oh and as for The LCD screens, the 15" on the IBM A31 is about $950..................

lol, good old prices from the manufacturers.
I know Motherboard prices are high as the do contain almost everything. But if you buy them from places other than IBM / Dell etc.. you can get the same for less. CPU can be bought from various outlets now. $800 seems about right for the motherboard from the manufacturer btw.
krazy1, but then some people overclock their brandnew $500 Graphics cards or $600 CPU
I say, have fun but do not over do it
My only other advice not related to this is get your Laptop insured against accidental damge.... That pay for anything broken or the accdental spills of wine on the keyboard (and so through to motherboard and killing it all of )
