a $1200 budget will not allow for newest chips... and besides, what all will your mom be using this computer for anyhow? surfing the net, word processing and email if she's like my mom. no need to waste the money on "fast" hardware heh

well, basicly the pc's for office use BUT, i may use it for some gaming.....that's why the budget's so high..........and also i may be swapping my current 3.0ghz with my mum's PC, that makes it two reasons why..........1200 is not enough??

I re-read your post and if all you need is cpu, mobo, ddr and monitor yes $1200 will be enough. Suppose I was thinking new top of the line GPU too.....

A top of the line monitor will cost you the most though. Check out the Sony GDM-F520, its what I use for my main system and its really nice, but pricy.

hey Shuki, qute avatar you have there~LOL............by the way, i wont get the fastest, i'll go for something which is somewhat top of the line and something which is very OCable, like when the 3.06/533 came out, they had the lower clock versions which is 2.4, 2.53, 2.66 and 2.8...and among all thsee, the 2.4 is the best overclocker, and that's what i really want, sort of like best bang for the buck!

My firend was checking out boards for his new P4c chip and he really likes the gigabyte board based on the 875 chipset, you should check that one out.
You shouldn't get a LCD monitor for gaming, they can only run in one res, and if its too slow, or too low quality you going to be stuck with it. They also have terrible pixel response times. If you do choose to get a CRT then go for one with an arpitchture (sp) grill screen. It looks so much better than shadow mask. The 2 lines on the screen are always over exadurated. You can barly see them, even if your looking for them.

Really good flat panels cost thousands and thousands of dollars and still can't match the image quality of a CRT. They are all limited to one res and the best pixel response time they have is 17MS.
Just because you won't use it now doesn't mean you won't use it later. You can still run on 133MHz and have support for 200MHz. You will be future proofing yourself because then you won't need a new mobo to get a 200MHz chip.

My Sony Stylepro SDM91/B Flatpanel LCD suits me just fine, these things are amazing, took me around a month to get used to the response time (shadowing) vs. the 19" CRT I had, but after I got used to it... I'm hooked, I love STARING at this thing, its so enormous and thin.
You couldn't go wrong with a LCD, but no 15" plz, resolution would blow.. get at least a 17".

ya, many thankz again........Craig, the reason that i'm reluctant to use a 533 chip on a 800fsb is that 1) they cost more 2) i wont get to use the 800chip because intel's newer chips wont be compatible with their older mobo like AMD so basicly 3) its a waste of the "extra" functions.......and 5) if if i were to OC, i dont REALLY think that i can archeive 200fsb with a 533chip, can't i?? do correct me if i'm wrong, please? and tek, how much did that monitor cost ya'??? i bet its more than 450bucks, can you sow me a link to those, i MIGHT be interested.....thankz a lot.
