OC Opinion Extrodinaire

Ok need an opinion as I haven't done any O/Cing for a while since the original tbirds. So anyways, I got me a barton 2500 and so far have it overclocked to 13.5 multi and 1.8V running rock solid and about 40C (double checked this with an external gauge, still in disbelief) at idle. I am sure I could hit 15 multi if I raised the voltage up another .5 but I am content to wait till the ram gets here so I can ramp up the FSB instead. So I am sitting at 2.25Ghz right now and need to know if this is a decent O/C for this particular chip. I am sure it could go up much higher but I am just running air cooling (seven fans just counting case fans) so no fancy water or peltier stuff on this rig. Any opinions will be great, thanks.

And for those curious, my last adventure saw a 700 Tbird at 1.2Ghz at about 45C idle using air cooling and no, my computer doesn't sound like a wind tunnel, just a ton of low noise big fans.

That's a great OC for that chip if ya ask me, what RAM are you getting, and what MOBO are you running on right now?

Getting this RAM off of newegg, ordered two sticks.

CORSAIR MEMORY XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series, Low Latency 256MB 32MX64 PC-2700LL With Heat Spreaders.

And I am running an Abit NF7 currently.

Nice, thats what I thought you were running (the ABIT NF7) - great board, and that RAM will DEF. help you out a lot on OC'ing.

System Specs

I think any OC over 300MHz is outstanding!
Good work

A compliment from either of you is really going to give me a big ego. Guess my next project once I get this thing stabilized (still fighting a USB woe) and max it as high as I can go, maybe the 'ol Radeon could do with a bit of OCing. Thanks for all the input everyone has given me, it turned out that the advice gave me a fast and stable as a rock system (knock on wood).

That is actually quite a good overclock.. I see that your memory is probably holding you back a tad, but otherwise a VERY solid overclock... Now just get that bugger stable!

I went a completely different route on my 2500+ AQXDA 0319 MPMW

The original settings (stock)

multi: 11.0
FSB: 166
total:1830MHz

The settings used (overclocked)

multi: 11.5
FSB: 200
total: 2300MHz

this is using completely stock voltages, and a Thermaltake Volcano 7+ (fan at medium speed)

MSI K7N2 DELTA - L motherboard
2 x 256MB OCZ PC3200 EL memory
2500+ Barton

Overall I am very happy with this 470MHz overclock... I am going to wait for someone to figure out a voltage mod for this motherboard... then I will be looking for some good liquid cooling, and 2.5GHz

Well hopefully my memory will be here sometime early this week, and with the freelance work I did and the selling of my old parts, I already have all this stuff paid for without touching my current funds save for about $20. Wyre, I am actually pretty surprised that you had such good luck with OCZ as I have bought two different sticks from them and neither would overclock more than 10Mhz beyond their defaults. Anyways, not a problem, they were both stable and fast sticks, just didn't overclock at all ^_^ I do have a question for either of you if you can answer. I should be able to do 14X200 once I get some better RAM in my system, correct? Like I said in my original post, I haven't done anything serious since the original TBirds so I am walking through kind of blind here in regards to what laws apply anymore. Thanks for replying too, appreciate all the input I can get!

Quick addition that I forgot to add, and I think my last post was long enough to warrent a new line, but I fixed the USB issue...though for the life of me I can't remember how. Hi, I am 20 and have Alzheimer's...well it sure feels like it sometimes.

rogeld,

First off,

One thing that I did forget to mention...

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS! Please enjoy your stay...

Secondly,

I know exactly what you mean about the OCZ... I had several of the PC2700 sticks that wouldn't even run at the default speeds.... terrible!
The next stick that I bought was the one with the red PCB, and the polished aluminum heat spreader... suposed to have been a better stick of memory, I found that wasn't so ... now this of course was months ago, before the EL series came out.

Lastly,

-flash forward about 6 months-

OCZ is not the same company.... I was rather dubious about buying OCZ again ... after three failed sticks.
But, I am actually quite impressed with the PC3200 EL series memory ...

Stock settings @ 400MHz (DDR Frequency) is 9-3-3-2, I have the sticks running @ 400MHz w/ settings of 6-3-2-2 !

Congrats on getting your USB problems sorted!

Once again welcome to the forums, very nice overclock you have going on... and I hope to see some benchies soon!

Well I will post some benches once I decide to reboot again since it hasn't restarted since I got it all up and running.

I wasn't aware that OCZ had gone through so many changes. I kind of avoided the company like the plague after being stiffed out of what I was told was superior RAM so I will see how Crucial's XMS series fairs.

Back to the first line, do you have any suggestions on what benchies you would want to see? I am not going to bother until I get some 333Mhz RAM in here since the 266 is figuratively chopping the balls off of my box...and boy that could be taken more than one way. Still, I am once again just back into the enthusiest scene after playing it safe for a bit and not quite sure what are the benchmarks used that actually mean something instead of just a slew of numbers. I know all about the whole 3dmark2k3 controversy and what not, so I wouldn't bother with that one, but what other suggestions are there OR what would you like to see me post as I am guessing you would want to compare your box with mine.

Hope to see more replies, just loving this feedback, always nice to learn new things and receive positive input.

Tried to take it up to 14X166 and no dice. Ran a few stress tests and windows hosed on it. I had the vcore at 1.85 which should have been enough for a .5X inrease in multiplier. Any suggestions on achieving that little bit more?

You got the new memory yet?
The nforce chipset really likes a high fsb.
I had mine at 211x11 and it scored a decent 19032 3dmarks2001 paired with a 9800 pro.

Your board can go at least to 220FSB, much better than the A7N8X I had.
Actually you should have bought some PC3500 memory to see the real power of a barton chip but I guess the price tag was too much.

2300MHz is the average overclock for a barton 2500+ according to the database over at overclockers.com
Some have reached over 2500MHz with air cooling
