I modded & OCed me 9700 Pro!
You can see the picts here, but basically I just chopped up a P60 heatsink into fourths and then cut two of those fourths into fourths and it all worked out rather nice.
Is 345/360 pretty good?

345 is about right for the core on BBA r9700 pro. however that 360 mem is really, great! mine tops out at 335 or so with black snow on 2k3 proxycon and troll tests....

Did you....
....put your 9700's fan onto it's own power-supply? I've found that really helps give some more headroom to the memory OCing.

yep. and have a 120mm case fan right over the top of it blowing ambient air across it. still 338 is max on proxycon with no black snow.

Any heatsinks?
I did notice a HUGE improvement in me memory OCing once I added them heatsinks....although it looks a bit getto now. (Although I think a bit of work with a black marker could fix that right up. ) Jeezeeeus! I just made a full run of 3dm2k1se at 360/360, I have no clue what the top end is on ANY of me new gear yet!!! (Yeah, and I like the feeling lots and it's a ball to just be looking for my limits...but I'm weird that way. )

WTG, that's a great OC for a 9700! Don't look bad either for a cut up heatsink, good work

Yeah, but...
...I cut the heatsink up just using a hacksaw and a concrete patio to brace it on at first and me thumb & fingers got a bit scraped up 'til I figured out to use me channel-locks to hold the little buggers while sawing them on the concrete. (NOTE TO SELF: Get a freaking bandsaw! )

Kewl little mod there Digi, I have done the same sort of mod on my 9500Pro except I just cut up the Thermaltake alluminum sinks that came with the GeForce 4 Chipset cooler I used to use...... I only had thermal tape no thermal adhesive to hold the sinks on......

I don't like thermal adhesives and have never used them, too much chance to muck things up and they're way too permanent.
I do the "put thermal paste on the chip in a little circle 'til the whole chip is about covered by the circle 'cept for the corners, then put a tiny drop of super-glue on each corner, then smoosh the heatsink on it" method that I was taught by Zarathustra. It has the advantage of getting a good contact between the chip & heatsink while at the same time being easy to "pop" off later with careful use of a butterknife & credit card.
I'm at stinking 378/360 right now and still going strong, I had no idea this card had anywhere NEAR this much in it!

Just got done with a run at 385/360 and scored 15,641....but I'm only running a 170FSB right now to limit variables. (Oh, and I've ran 3dm2k1se about 14 times so far in a row since I rebooted. )

My stock 9700PRO (no mods) can hit 370 core and 350 memory. I should throw some heatsinks on my memory to see if it can go 370 or higher. Maybe with a better HSF on the core I can get this baby to 400MHz....imagine that!
Nice job DW...

Darn good question. It was the samsung, but I'm not sure of the rating since I ain't really good at making sense of those memory chips numbering schemes and figured I'd be finding out it's top-end me own way.
Sweet jesus on a pogo-stick, I'm almost thru a run at 400/360 and I'm not seeing anything weird or anomoly-ish...it's on nature now and if it makes it thru that it generally makes it thru the run.
OMMFG!
BTW-THANK YOU TERRY!!!! THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH!!!! I THINK YOU ACCIDENTALLY GAVE ME THE BEST R300 CHIP EVER MADE!!!!!!

Put a tiny HS right on the back of the card where the core is. You should be able to take the core even higher then.

No, I actually clocked back to 392/360 since on the 4th or 5th run of 3dm2k1se there was some polyfacting going on in nature. (I like the term "polyfacting", I think I'll keep it. ) She's looking like a rock at 392/360, but me highest FSB so far is 175Mhz which is pretty decent, but I want MORE!

5578 in 3dm2k3, but I clocked her back to 392/360.
16,015 in 3dm2k1se at 392/360, I'm geek-vain enough to be happy she's still cracks 16k in default mode. Heck, she still busts 10k with 4xaa & 8xaf! LOVING it!
(Scores copied & pasted from an EB post, I'm lazy today...but having a BLAST! )

I actually never even looked at getting water cooling on my rig. I am pretty happy with what I got so far using air. Maybe one day I will start evaluating my water cooling options and take the plunge (get it??? lol...bad joke).

Well it's nice to see the card is performing for u so well.........On a sad not after reading you post I decided I had to soop up my 9500Pro.......sad to say that I chipped the core while removing the shim and now she no work no more
What pissed me off was that after i removed the stock fan and removed the TIM they used, the heatsink did not make contact with the core.....hence the removal of the shim.......damm thing was on their to stay which is how I chipped the GPU core
running off a Rage 3D II PCI card at the moment

OUCH!!
I am soo sorry to hear that dude, I'd be crying if it happened to me.
That's one of the reasons I didn't touch the shim, that and it looked to me like the chip top & shim top lined up pretty evenly....I didn't see the gap everyone was talking about on mine so I just gave it a good coating of paste and made sure I felt the paste smoosh when I put it on.
I hope something good | |
