Oc noob overdone it

Hi there,

I've a couple of questions that i need help with if you peeps don't mind delving in.
Im intending on keeping speedstep disabled on my puta to keep the oc'ing stable.. However, using an Asus P5b motherboard and an e6400 cpu, ive disabled speedstep within the bios yet the cpu is throttling within windows vista. The stock temp for the e6400 is around 50c, as it's overclocked upto 2.92ghz. Could Throttle Managment have anything to do with this? it's enabled in the bios.

Also, when running Prime95 for over 10 minutes, its showing the temps of both cores hitting around 78c each.. now this is hign isnt it? But is it normal for a stock cooler? Im using a thermaltake case which should be keeping things cool. Artic silver is very minimum on the heatsink, should I apply more?

I'd advise that you reset your cmos and promptly shut down your computer before the poor thing melts.
the intel stock cooler is only there to keep the cpu within stable temperature ranges at stock speed, it isn't designed for overclocking. First chance you get, buy an aftermarket heatsink like a Zalman CNPS9700 or perhaps one of the Noctua ones and rip off the intel stock cooler.
For now i wouldn't bother worrying about your cpu speed, i'd worry more about those temperatures, they look dangerously high

I would advise against ripping the stock cooler off! just use a screwdriver.. it might take a little longer but I'm sure it's a little bit better for the board

I have to agree with mousey up there stock Heatsinks are rubbish in comparison to even the cheap, compatible, aftermarket coolers. This is why they basically come "free" with the CPU. Sometimes the stock coolers even do a poor job at maintaining sane temps at stock speeds. My brother's new phenom system is a perfect example. AMD really needs to do something about that stock cooler. its the same one they've been using since socket AM2 first hit the market.

But i guess i digress. Also, look in to the ARTIC COOLING line of heatsinks. They have always done me right and they are a fairly inexpensive solution. One more thing, wow......those temps are dangerously high.....GO BACK while it still functions!
