Help with shared memory (Intel)

I have a Gateway 6840 notebook with Intel 945 GM video, which claims to share between 8 and 224 (why 224?) MB of ram. Problem is, it is stuck at 8, and it doesn't seem to be an option I can change in the bios. I've had a program or two complain I didn't have enough video ram, so I'm assuming it's not automatic.

Any ideas?

System Specs

It starts with 8MB and dynamically allocates more as needed, maybe some option needs to be altered in the driver.
