It's a fact of life that in the video card world something is always coming that's better, has more features and generally outperforms the previous card. It's a fact of life that video card manufacturers are having a hard time today keeping up with the chips released by ATI and NVIDIA. Some manufacturers, in fact, skip whole cards because other cards fit the target market just as well or better than the card that's new.

ATI really got into the forefront of 3D video cards with the release of the RADEON video card in 2000. This was the first ATI card to support Hardware Transformation and Lighting, 3 textures per pixel per pass, matrix skinning and more. The next card in ATI's lineup was the RADEON 8500. The card that put ATI on the map as the performance and features leader was the RADEON 9700 Pro. This card was the first DirectX 9.0 card with support for Pixel and Vertex Shader 2.0.

ASUS is a manufacturer of computer components such as motherboards, video cards, notebooks, monitors, and other things having to do with computers. Over the years ASUS has made many popular video cards based upon both NVIDIA and ATI graphics chips. ATI launched the R520 chip, their first Shader Model 3.0 card in October of 2005. If one thing can be said about the R520 it was very late. Originally scheduled for a spring 2005 launch, the X1800XT and variants didn't make it to the market till very late last year. Today, a scant three months after the release of the X1K series, ATI has already launched the replacement to the X1800XT, the R580 or X1900, but I'm reviewing the ASUS EAX X1800XT TOP card.
