Martin Luther King Day!

US Observes Martin Luther King Holiday
-----
Americans are honoring the life and work of Martin Luther King, Junior, the slain civil-rights leader, who would have been 74 years old this year.

Monday is a federal holiday honoring King's memory, and most of the nation's government offices, financial institutions and schools are closed.

President Bush will remember King when he attends a Baptist church in suburban Washington. Mr. Bush has called the Nobel peace laureate a modern American hero who rallied people of all races to rise up against injustice.

Observances also will take place at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, where Reverend King served as pastor, alongside his father (Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr.).

King is credited with not only leading black America's civil-rights struggle, but also making non-violence the accepted means of seeking social change in the United States.

The civil-rights movement in the United States began when King founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957. In the years that followed, he organized non-violent protests against racial segregation and other unfair treatment of black Americans, and suffered frequent threats, attacks and arrests as a result.

King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, four years before he was assassinated in the state of Tennessee.

I would just like to say that personally, I think that Martin Luther King ranks up there with the greats like Mohatma Ghandi as the greatest peacemakers of all time, and that his death was one of the greatest trajedies of the century...

A true hero! What a great individual to open so many peoples eyes. Martin Luther King showed us all that we are equal and no one man deserves any less from another. What strikes me most about him is how he went about changing our lives. The peaceful (as peaceful as such a subject could be) way he marched into our hearts and minds. He showed us too look beyond the surface and see that we are all created equal. To show that love knows no color or gender and extends to all of us.
