SONAbeam 1250-M Free Space Optical (FSO) system

fSONA announces at the Wireless Communications Association (WCA) Technical Symposium in San Jose the release of the rate-adaptive SONAbeam(TM) 1250-M Free Space Optical (FSO) system for wireless communications.

The 1250-M, as well as the previously released 1250-S, provides wireless connectivity at either Fast (100/125 Mbps) or true Gigabit (1000/1250 Mbps) Ethernet speeds over ranges up to four kilometers (2.5 miles). This gives customers the ability to extend their networks with a product that adapts to their growing needs. Implementing a license-free, wireless solution that can be redeployed saves time and money for enterprise users and gives service providers flexibility in providing access to broadband customers. Currently the SONAbeam(TM) is in demand to provide backbone capacity for Wi-Fi networks -- both for high-speed connections between nodes and to connect local Wi-Fi networks with the Internet.

"There are many optical wireless products on the market that serve up the standard telecom and business network speeds, however, the specialized speeds required by specific industries are often not accomodated," says fSONA President & CEO, Theresa Carbonneau. "Our customers let us know they needed a product that could be customized to their specific applications. In keeping with our mission to provide simple solutions, we designed the 1250 series to be rate-adaptive and provide a range of speeds to better serve our customers."

In addition to making the jump from Fast to Gigabit Ethernet, the 1250 series provides transmission from 34 up to 1500 Mbps for numerous specialized applications. The signal is fully regenerated and reclocked (3R) at all data rates in this broad range to ensure the highest possible signal integrity. One example of applicability to a specialized application is the transmission of video. SONAbeam offers transparent network transport of various video standards including NTSC, PAL, HDTV, SDI, MPEG and DVB-ASI for Cable TV and Satellite companies, Film and Post-Production Facilities, Production Studios, Broadcasters or Internet Providers.

SONAbeam(TM) FSO technology uses invisible light beams to deliver high-speed wireless communications. By transmitting through the atmosphere, SONAbeam(TM) dispenses with the substantial costs of digging up sidewalks to install fiber. Transmission by SONAbeam(TM) eliminates the need to obtain costly radio frequency (RF) spectrum licenses, is immune to electro-magnetic/RF interference, and is virtually impossible to eavesdrop on or intercept.

About fSONA

fSONA Communications designs and manufactures the award-winning (Product of the Year -- Network Magazine, 2002) SONAbeam(TM) series of free space optical (FSO) wireless systems for delivering high-speed communications to carriers, service providers and enterprises.

SONAbeam(TM) systems use an unlicensed, wireless technology operating at speeds up to 1.25 Gbps and distances up to 4km. SONAbeam(TM) systems are marketed worldwide and installed in 23 countries around the world.

fSONA was founded in 1997 after reaching an exclusive global licensing agreement for free-space optical receiver technology developed by British Telecom Labs in the U.K. fSONA is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada with regional sales offices worldwide.

ToshiroOC is on a distinguished road

It's when I see things like this I think that the reinvention of the Internet is truly possible soon - the reinvention meaning a p2p network that doesn't touch a single telecom along the way Every home has a repeater and a minimum of two connections, and its all downhill from there Once technology allows for non-line-of-sight omnidirectional wireless internet connections in the open over distances over 5km or so, I'm going to launch my plan to start the second internet
