According to Nintendo, 45% of Mario Kart DS owners used the game's Wi-Fi features within the first week. By Sunday, 112,000 copies of the game had been bought in the U.S. During the same time period, nearly 52,000 unique users logged onto Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Mario Kart DS is the first title to use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. There are no addition fees for using the service, and Nintendo has tried to make it as simple and streamlined as possible. Upcoming DS titles which will use the service include Animal Crossing: Wild World and Metroid Prime Hunters.
