Nano sales good, bad, depending upon source

Sales of the wee little iPod Nano during its first week on the market were good, bad, or something in between, depending upon to whom you listen.

AppleInsider reported Tuesday that Nano sales have fallen short of expectations, citing an analyst report from American Technology Research. Analyst Shaw Wu, who confirmed that the black model is greatly outselling the white one, said Apple stores contacted reported only selling 200 to 500 of their initial 1,800 to 2,500 Nanos.

Quoting the same analyst, the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal said Tuesday that sales were "good, not great," possibly because of sticker shock--consumers buying the Nano are getting a much smaller product, but not more storage for the dollar, as they are accustomed to. Wu also suggested that Apple might need to either increase the storage capacity of the Nano to match the iPod Mini, or cut the price, the story said.

Forbes published a more optimistic report Wednesday citing Piper Jaffrey, which said the Nano was "selling well" and might do better than initially expected. Jaffrey surveyed 20 Apple stores and found that none had black 4 GB Nanos in stock. And Apple's Web site recently spiked to all-time highs as a result of Nano publicity, the report said.

AppleInsider member "Moofa" was quick to dismiss the analysts: "Remember when the original Mini came out? It got panned by the pundits as being too expensive for the storage capacity and then proceeded to become the most popular iPod model in the lineup."
