NVIDIA PureVideo Technology Brings Home-Theater Quality Video to the PC

SANTA CLARA, CA—DECEMBER 20, 2004—NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), a worldwide leader in graphics and digital media processors, today announced NVIDIA® PureVideo™ technology, a combination of hardware and software technologies designed to raise the bar on the video capabilities of today’s desktop and notebook PCs. The addition of PureVideo technology to the GeForce™ 6 Series of graphics processing units (GPUs) allows for accelerated playback of MPEG-2 and high-definition (HD) video content at home-theater levels of quality, resulting in crisp, vibrant and stutter-free video on any display.

Enabled by a dedicated, programmable video processing engine found on the Company’s award-winning GeForce 6 Series GPUs, PureVideo technology eliminates the trade-off in quality traditionally associated with video on the PC by executing on an advanced set of algorithms typically found in high-end consumer electronics devices. PureVideo technology eliminates the need for separate hardware or chipsets and takes the load off the PC’s multi-purpose central processing unit (CPU) to deliver to consumers, high-quality video playback at resolutions up to 720p and 1080i.

Quite a few unhappy people wandering around after this announcement... here's a lovely sample discussion i saw...

"Person A: "To fully experience NVIDIA PureVideo technology in GeForce 6
Series GPUs, the following software support is required:

3:2 pull down, MPEG-2 acceleration, and advanced de-interlacing require
the NVIDIA DVD Decoder with Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center
Edition
VMR Scaling requires VMR9 support found in Windows XP Media Center Edition
2005"

Money grabbing, tight-wad bunch of f#!*ers. Ass-wipes.

Person B: Spend 500 for a graphics card and can't afford 20 bucks? Aw well
it really is nice to see mpeg2 1080 with this decoder.

Person A: Wtf has what i can afford got to do with anything?
I could ask do nVidia really need the $20 they are charging for this.
I don't like the way they've handled this at all, it stinks.
I pay for a piece of hardware that advertises certain features and expect
those features to work, but no, first we find out that our new cards don't
actually do everything we've been led to believe they do.

Then when we do eventually get a chance to use some of these features they
have the audacity to charge us for thier own incompetence, we wait this
long for them to sort thier shit out and then they hit with this crap.

20 bucks ain't nothing, this is about principles. You do have those right?

Person C: Yeah I spent the 20 bucks and I was pissed as hell even when I
did do it. But now I'm extremly pissed. I've had these features for the
most part for over a month and then they announce absoletly nothing new.
People want other things besides mpeg2 and wmv. People want encoding.
People are sick of waiting. People deserve these features. But once again
Nvidia screws us. Makes me feel like I bought a 5800. Lol last Nvidia card
any of us should buy again.

Person D: I truly do not believe nVidia treats us early Geforce 6800
customers right by charging 20$ for a promised feature, so I won't buy
their purevideo crap and I will consider this behaviour for my future
upgrade plans.

Person E: i would be pretty pissed if i dropped 500 quid on a card that
doesn't have a feature it's supposed to have. And it's not like it's a
small thing either."

nvidia screwed the pooch agin on this one(beat you to it neon). the only 68800s this will work with is the rev2 6800 plain. all us 6800 gt & ultra owners are ass out.
then to charge another $20 to get full functionality for the people that can use it?
part of the reason(small part) that i purchased this card was for that functionality. it was included in the purchase price & it looks like i will never get its benefit. they really need to clean up their act on this one.

Well that sux for those that needed the card for that feature, its very unproffessional of Nvidia doing this.

bananaman will become famous soon enoughbananaman will become famous soon enough

it is things like this that will help decide my PCI-E upgrade next year. Nvidia just seem out to screw us (the gamer) where as ATI seem out to help us - even if this is just the result of marketing , then ATI are doing a hell of a lot better job!

Yep definitely suxs we have to pay and it doesn't work 100% for most higher-end cards. At least the quality is excellent
