ATI comp - 9800 XT winning "Kuwahara" shader: VOTE for 2nd place
Congratulations to Alexey Barkovoy you have just won the 9800 XT video card in our Smartshader competition! All the judges agreed your "Kuwahara" shader was the best of the bunch but it was a close call, The "sepia old movie" and "TV signal" shaders came close behind.
Id like to thank everyone who entered, we had quite a few entries and Roger and Maurice were very pleased with the standard of entries in this competition. Those who are interested in seeing the award winning shader and a selection of some shaders which were entered into this competition I have some up for download here. Thanks to Terry Makedon for his original concept for this competition and thanks to Roger Descheneaux and Maurice Ribble for taking the time to help our members with questions on the forum. Please remember if you were unable to enter this competition or didnt have the time, we are still giving away a Visiontek 9600 video card so be sure to put your name in for that one. Vote for your favourite shader! Please vote for your favourite shader in this comp - alex barkovoy won the smartshader 9800 XT competition so to be fair ive excluded him from this chance to win a cyberxgames tshirt kindly donated by Terry Makedon in ATI, so please download from here unzip and vote for the author of your favourite shader. you can post in here why you like the particular shader, we just need a vote for the author ! thanks to Maurice in ATI for gathering all the shaders together, with the new pssControl2 file for us. pssEffectsDH.zip (includes new pssControl2 file for Cat 4.3) and discuss/vote here my apologies to all those who had already voted, I had (accidentally) left out a few shaders, they are now all here so please revote |

The "AlphaTransition" file is missing the extension for some reason. It shows up on the FTP as a RAR file, but the extension isn't present after downloading it. Anyone else get this?

Congratulations to all who entered. I was extremely impressed by a bunch of them. There are a lot in there that IMO are better than any that shipped with the pss tool so if you had any interest in seeing new effects I'd recommend trying these out.
For those wondering what "Kuwahara" means, the Kuwahara line shader basically makes everything look cartoony (also called cell shading). It works great in Serious Sam at 800x600. Also as a word of warning, some effects might not work correctly on some systems because the time variable counts in different units on a per system bases. For example to get the stormy shader to work I had to multiply time by 1000 in the shader (Intel vs. Amd processors difference). This isn't a bug in stormy.pss, but rather a bad decision on how we implemented time in the shading language. Just so you know we didn't count this against a shader when judging them. I'd like to hear which ones you guys liked best! |

Congratulations, Alexey. It really is a lovely shader.
BTW, I just noticed that the shader I sent on the 9th of March isn't available for download. Didn't you get it, or was I just mistaken when I thought that the competition was until the 10th? In any case, could you list it? It's the one I spent most time on, it's the only one I haven't also sent to Beyond3D (although I did send an older version of it) and I think it'd be a shame not to make it available even if it didn't enter the competition. (If it really was too late, and therefore you don't want to add it to the "vote for the shader" competition, just add it later). Also, does the new driver fix anything with regard to smartshader effect? There were quite a few bugs in it in version 4.2 that were reported as part of the competitions (such as the memory leak and texture loading problems). Thank you all guys for congratulations!
It's really great receiving such a regard! Between, don't forget to vote for other authors - now it's yours time to choose! I've really liked "sepia old movie" (ArsSepiaMovie.pss) by Arsil - it demonstates both artistic taste and good coding (including demostration how to workaround multiple texture bug ). Curently it's only voted twice, but deserves much more!ET3D: one of mine other PSS scripts is not exposed for download too. Maurice ATI: And what's happened to PSS compiler in Cat4.3? It's dissapeared for me... |

Alexey, now that you mentioned about a multiple texture workaround, I suddenly thought how stupid I was not realising how it could be done easily. So I added it to my slides shader (the one that isn't available for download), and put it online at http://www.et3d.com/misc/slides.zip.

Alexey Barkovoy - The problem is that this release puts the OpenGL registry keys in a different location. I have a build of pssControl that fixes the problem and hopefully it can be released soon.

You definitely get my sympathy. Also my admiration on such a quick job judging and then fixing the archive. I'm very impressed. At Beyond3D competition results take a lot longer to appear. (Although they come up with good excuses, too. )

The ones in the zip file Zardon just put up are the ones I got for judging. ET3D, I didn't get the slides one so that is why it's still not in that zip. I guess we just didn't get it soon enough.
The slides2.pss shader is pretty neat though. Certainly worth looking at for those interested in smartShader effects. |
