Get Yourself and Your PC Ready for Winter

Autumn's chill winds announce the time for a little self-indulgence â€” it's going to be cold and dark before it gets warm and bright again, so here are a few things you and your PC can do to settle in for winter.

First change your wallpaper! No, not the kind you seem to have a gift for hanging at an angle, but the kind on your computer screen where all those icons frolic. Make it something personal, like the last flowers of autumn, your kids, your ex â€” whatever, as long as it speaks to you.

In Windows-whatever, it's not hard. First, get your image. That can come from a digital camera, a scanner or from the many photo shops that offer the images-on-a-disk option when you're developing traditional film.

Next, get with USB â€” as in Universal Serial Bus. It's what's happening for peripherals and PC connectivity in general. Most newer PCs will come with a couple of USB ports, but a PCI card with four USB 2.0 (latest standard) is less than $50. I got mine at a Radio Shack., but they're also available at other retailers and online.
