939 pin Athlon 64 will be AMD's jolly green giant

BY THIS TIME next year sales of Athlon 64s using the 939 pin socket design will be the dominant CPU AMD is selling, according to sources close to the action.

When AMD releases the Athlon 64 in September, it is widely expected to introduce a 754 pin model and a 940 pin model too.

But it also has plans for a 939 pin CPU and we presume this will slot into 940 sockets – otherwise the mobo makers will go stark staring bonkers.

So is the 940/939 pin Athlon 64 really an Opteron? We've quizzed AMD hard about this through the year from time to time, and the executives we've talked to insist there's a big difference between an Opteron and an Athlon 64.

Mind you, Intel insists there's a big difference between a Xeon and a Pentium 4 but we'll be dashed if we can find much to distinguish them apart from the additional cash on board.

So how are the numbers looking?

These only are preliminary figures through channel partners, but by the second quarter of next year, twin channel 939 pins will probably reach the 3,000,000+ shipments. The anticipated shipments of 754, 940 and 939 CPUs in Q1 of next year are around the 1,250,000+, 32,000 and 250,000+ level respectively.

So that implies to us that the 754-pin Athlon 64 will only have a relatively short window of selling opportunity, with AMD gradually displacing this cut down chip with first 940 and then 939 pin microprocessors.

A sort of an Athlon64 Duron? Maybe.

We better not be able to add whatever functionality that was taken away just by filling the pin hole on the mobo with condictive material, it would just be too easy.
