Mozilla May Finally Move to a 64-Bit Browser With Firefox 3.6

Mozilla's Firefox browser does not lead Microsoft's Internet Explorer in market share, but it does lead in other ways. The new 3.5 version of Firefox introduced last week offers support for the latest standards, including HTML 5, XHTML, and SVG graphics -- all of which stock installs of Internet Explorer 8 do not support.

However, Mozilla does trail Internet Explorer 8 in one respect -- Mozilla has not offered an official 64-bit version of its software. One developer is working to catch Mozilla up, though. Since 2008 a contributor who goes by the screen name Makoto has ported Firefox 3.0, and now 3.5 to 64-bit editions. He has announced recently that he plans to contribute the 64-bit versions for 3.6 and up, which may mean that Firefox will at last get an official 64-bit build.

I'd LIKE to use IE8's 64 bit browser, but since ADOBE hasn't gotten off their dead asses and made a 64 bit flashplayer...

I'm all for 64-bit applications finally taking off, but I'm not sure how browsers would benefit from the switch? I doubt that they perform that many 64-bit integer operations to get much faster and it certainly won't make them less RAM hungry.

Re: Mozilla May Finally Move to a 64-Bit Browser With Firefox 3.6

OldBuzzard, if you took a look around the Internet a bit more you might find that you are the one who is wrong. Alpha edition releases of Flash Player 10.0 for Linux x64 do exist:

Adobe Labs - Downloads: Flash Player 10

I have it running with a custom compile of Shiretoko 3.5 here at home.

Zelig, or anyone else here on this forum, have any of you had any luck with getting TraceMonkey to work under Firefox 3.5 or 3.5.1 under Linux x64? I have the environment variables listed as active within my about:config but JS is terrible, it's worse now than it was under FF 2.0 x32 on Linux. Other than that this new FF 3.5 kicks ass in performance.
