Kazaa not being monitored? Think Again!
Whats this controversy we have all been hearing in the news in the past few months about weather kazaa is being montored by any federal or other piracy agencies. Well think again! Yes, that’s right. If you ever have used Kazaa well here is a good news for you that your IP, host name, isp, and anything you ever downloaded was saved on a log and sent to a agency that is montorig your connection, most likely your isp, in this case it was FastTrack. Now how do you believe me if that is really happening? Well we did a little experiment for outselves to check it out. I downloaded a Motion Picture (Name Removed) from Kazaa lite and then a few days later we get a e-mail from the ISP of the person who performed this test for us, saying how we broke the AUP of the ISP and that we should take matters into our hands.
The company supposibly reported it to our ISP was Universal City Studios Productions LLLP. This is a little bit of information on what they had to say to the ISP. Quote:
Here is a little part of the rest of the e-mail containing the part where the person’s information was stored that was sent to the ISP. Quote:
UPDATE: A lot of people have asked if this applies to Kazaa Lite to and Yes it does because we tested on a regular machine with kazaa and one with kazaa lite! _________________________________ Source: TechCritic via konvict Last edited by Dom; Jun 11, 2003 at 04:17 PM. |

I hear RIAA will be secretly installing spyware on your computers, along with microphones, video cameras, and other bugs throughout your house in the near future.

I'd like to know how they go about monitoring what files people are downloading. Also how do they know the download is actually the copyrighted material because files are often mislabeled.

the more technology we use...the easier it is for agencies to keep track of us.

I have Adelphia Powerlink cable. On the 4th they were down all day long. When the service came back up there was one IP address that consistantly gives a HORRIBLE ping an choppy conectivity. Problem is, this is the first server I always hit- everywhere I go online, no matter what. I ping it and here is what I get:
Pinging 10.0.196.1 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=57ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=13ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=53ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=14ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=14ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=35ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=37ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=42ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=67ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=130ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=90ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=12ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=43ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=45ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=33ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=190ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=44ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=49ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=652ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=38ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=22ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=171ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=45ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=524ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=86ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=226ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=112ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=56ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=402ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=10ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=228ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=221ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=220ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=28ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=419ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=10ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=122ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=536ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=87ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=13ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=488ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=63ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=258ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=99ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=257ms TTL=255 Reply from 10.0.196.1: bytes=32 time=10ms TTL=255 Ping statistics for 10.0.196.1: Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% lo Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 10ms, Maximum = 652ms, Average = 129ms Some of those pings suck!! I turn on my firewall and guess what? It is dropping IP's left and right- about one every second, all day long, from My OWN ISP!! So could someone with more knowledge on this subject tell me if this is part of " big brother" snooping on me? I wouldn't doubt it, but I haven't used Kazaa in a while anyway, nothing to hide here- But still, my connection is ruined, I can't even play online games at all- and I ALWAYS had a good ping for 2 years before- I need help getting to the bottom of this- And I think it IS related to the news story! I am cancelling my subscription to Adelphia and moving accross town in a week anyway, I am buying my own cable modem and setting up a NEW Adelphia account (because they are the only cable internet access in my area)- I can only hope it gets better- but it will probably be the same thing. Hopefully someone reading this will be able to help me investigate this problem with this IP address further.

well it would seem that if you used kazaa lite that you are not using the fasttrack system since you have no ads and spyware... its also rather odd that the person that is actually sharing the files is not listed there huh?

Aren't 10.x.x.x addresses private / off-net?
Back to P2P though - it's certainly been reported that "enforcement agencies" have been searching for SHARED material that is available, I thought is was upload servers they scanned - and then sent nastygrams to their ISP. Of course, if you are a P2P "good citizen", and share what you download..... A partial remedy to their probing, is the IP blocklists, but it only takes ONE of their IP's to be unknown, and they're free to surf you share again! And so the war goes on - just as the virus and antivirus writers are locked in a power struggle. |
