Kazaa not being monitored? Think Again!

Whats this controversy we have all been hearing in the news in the past few months about weather kazaa is being montored by any federal or other piracy agencies. Well think again! Yes, that’s right. If you ever have used Kazaa well here is a good news for you that your IP, host name, isp, and anything you ever downloaded was saved on a log and sent to a agency that is montorig your connection, most likely your isp, in this case it was FastTrack. Now how do you believe me if that is really happening? Well we did a little experiment for outselves to check it out. I downloaded a Motion Picture (Name Removed) from Kazaa lite and then a few days later we get a e-mail from the ISP of the person who performed this test for us, saying how we broke the AUP of the ISP and that we should take matters into our hands.

The company supposibly reported it to our ISP was Universal City Studios Productions LLLP. This is a little bit of information on what they had to say to the ISP.

Quote:
It has come to our attention that <> Services is the service provider for the IP address listed below, from which unauthorized copying and distribution (downloading, uploading, file serving, file "swapping" or other similar activities) of Universal?s motion picture(s) listed below is taking place. We believe that the Internet access of the user engaging in this infringement is provided by <> or a downstream service provider who purchases this connectivity from <>.
That’s a little part of the e-mail that was sent to the ISP from Univsersal Studio’s. When we were first notified about this we were in a little bit of shock our selves too because, we always heard that Kazaa is safe and this is that.

Here is a little part of the rest of the e-mail containing the part where the person’s information was stored that was sent to the ISP.

Quote:
Title: << REMOVED >>
Infringement Source: FastTrack
Initial Infringement Timestamp: 18 May 2003 09:48:36 GMT
Recent Infringment Timestamp: 18 May 2003 09:48:36 GMT
Infringer Username: << REMOVED >>
Infringing Filename: << REMOVED >>
Infringing Filesize: 710539264
Infringers IP Address: << REMOVED >>
Infringers DNS Name: N/A
Infringing URL: << REMOVED >>
Well there you have it. A little bit of information on how the Kazaa story really works. We are still in the process of trying to talk to the ISP. We will let you know if we have any updates.

UPDATE: A lot of people have asked if this applies to Kazaa Lite to and Yes it does because we tested on a regular machine with kazaa and one with kazaa lite!

I hear RIAA will be secretly installing spyware on your computers, along with microphones, video cameras, and other bugs throughout your house in the near future.

I'd like to know how they go about monitoring what files people are downloading. Also how do they know the download is actually the copyrighted material because files are often mislabeled.

the more technology we use...the easier it is for agencies to keep track of us.

Kind of odd considering FastTrack is the network Kazaa connects to if I recall right. So you're saying they rat out their own users?

I have Adelphia Powerlink cable. On the 4th they were down all day long. When the service came back up there was one IP address that consistantly gives a HORRIBLE ping an choppy conectivity. Problem is, this is the first server I always hit- everywhere I go online, no matter what. I ping it and here is what I get:

Pinging 10.0.196.1 with 32 bytes of data:

I go on the internet and find all kinds of things about this "IANA-ARIN" being involved in setting off firewalls and trying to access peoples machines. I turn on my firewall and guess what? It is dropping IP's left and right- about one every second, all day long, from My OWN ISP!! So could someone with more knowledge on this subject tell me if this is part of " big brother" snooping on me? I wouldn't doubt it, but I haven't used Kazaa in a while anyway, nothing to hide here- But still, my connection is ruined, I can't even play online games at all- and I ALWAYS had a good ping for 2 years before- I need help getting to the bottom of this- And I think it IS related to the news story!

I am cancelling my subscription to Adelphia and moving accross town in a week anyway, I am buying my own cable modem and setting up a NEW Adelphia account (because they are the only cable internet access in my area)- I can only hope it gets better- but it will probably be the same thing. Hopefully someone reading this will be able to help me investigate this problem with this IP address further.

Hey, do you use Adelphia Powerlink??? If so, PM me- I need you to run a test for me- I want to see if everyone is having this same problem. I think they are spying on us.

EcPercy will become famous soon enough

well it would seem that if you used kazaa lite that you are not using the fasttrack system since you have no ads and spyware... its also rather odd that the person that is actually sharing the files is not listed there huh?

Aren't 10.x.x.x addresses private / off-net?

Back to P2P though - it's certainly been reported that "enforcement agencies" have been searching for SHARED material that is available, I thought is was upload servers they scanned - and then sent nastygrams to their ISP.

Of course, if you are a P2P "good citizen", and share what you download.....

A partial remedy to their probing, is the IP blocklists, but it only takes ONE of their IP's to be unknown, and they're free to surf you share again!

And so the war goes on - just as the virus and antivirus writers are locked in a power struggle.

IP Blocks for Private Internets
The IP blocks

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)

are reserved as private address space, specified in the RFC 1918. This means everybody can set up an internal network using addresses in these blocks, but packets originating from those addresses should never appear on the internet.

Consequently, the administrators of those internal networks are not obliged to register themselves with a whois database such as the RIPE database.

Thus, if you have received packets originating from these addresses, there is either a misconfiguration somewhere or the packets that you received contain a spoofed IP address, or they have been sent from within your own network.

RFC 1918 can be found at ftp://ftp.ripe.net/rfc/rfc1918.txt
The ip you pinged is "internal" to your ISP's network (if I pinged the same ip I would reach a totally different computer, if any).

Thanks for the info- I guess I just have a really crappy Server now- whether or not they are spying is harder to say- I don't really care as long as my connection works- Maybe I'll go try to download something from a P2P and see what happens.
