Has streaming media already rendered discs obsolete?

This just in, the format war is over. The 18-month honeymoon analysts had given Blu-ray has prematurely ended, and while sales have risen from nothing to something barely eclipsing okay, its successor may already be over the horizon.

Re: Has streaming media already rendered discs obsolete?

until world-wide broadband speeds average at more than a few mb/s at a low enough cost and data limit, enough for true HD in real-time without blowing your monthly limit in a day, i still think people will opt for higher quality optical media...

Just wait another year or so, at least as long as BD prices keep falling.

Re: Has streaming media already rendered discs obsolete?

I think streaming media has a long way to go (especially here in NZ with the pathetic internet speeds)and that physical formats will still be vital over the coming years.

blown503 will become famous soon enough

Re: Has streaming media already rendered discs obsolete?

Even though blue-ray looks great, its too expensive to buy another entire collection of movies. I mean the several hundred regular dvds I own legaly are still good enough for everyone I know. Even if blue-ray disc was the exact same price as the good ole standard dvd I still wouldnt run out and buy new ones just because they are blue-ray. And look at all the new crap movies they are putting on blue-ray, I wouldnt buy them either. I think streaming media in HD will be the best way to go anyways.

DVDs are 4-8 gig, blu-ray is upto 50gb (unless an extra layer of compression is added)

Ok that makes my point even more it would take days at my current ISP's DL rate a 40 gig film with extras would take on average about 3 weeks for me to get

Massive massive changes needed

Re: Has streaming media already rendered discs obsolete?

same here in australia, the speeds and infrastructure just aren't there, and probably won't be for at least a decade - the only places that would benefit in the near future, would be some european countries that already have insane speeds at low prices, and probably the US, if they sort out their pricing structure vs. net neutrality

Re: Has streaming media already rendered discs obsolete?

when every home can be guaranteed a 100MB/S (so 1Gbps connection) will there be enough bandwidth to compete with blu-ray.... until then, blu-ray has a few more tricks up it's sleave with the ability to expand to over 200GB and 2160p, at which point we'd need nearly 190MB/s to try and touch that.
