Of the about 30,000 cases the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has filed against peer-to-peer users, the Jammie Thomas case is the only one to go to trial. In October of last year the trial ended in an RIAA victory, with a $222,000 penalty assessed against her. However, in September of this year, the original judge in the case ruled a mistrial, saying he had erred in giving instructions to the jury.
