Dawn Demo: Is ATI IQ really better, judge for yourself (56k BEWARE!)
Well we all know the recent article regarding the new OPENGL patch allowing the Dawn demo to run on ATI cards, for those of you who missed it, Dom posted it earlier here or you can head to the nice article that MrB put up on Rage3d over here.
I decided to install the demo and run the patch myself on my overclocked 9800 pro, set to 435 core and 800 ram levels, just so we could all see if you guys can tell the difference between Nvidia and ATI IQ. Is this just a myth that ATI IQ is better or can you really not tell the difference? Far be it for me to attempt to sway your views so ill let you judge for yourself. Using HypersnapDX my tool of choice I set the Demo levels to 1600x1200 with 16 quality aniso and 4FSAA and took 4 screenshots of the demo running. For the links head into the forum, click the "view article comments", but please be aware that this is NOT for dial up users they are really large jpeg files. |

Guys, you can download the nude patch here - 33 kb (Autor & idea: Corak, Uttar). Not sure if it'll work though.

I take it won't run on an 8500 since it's not a DX9 card?

Great Demo.
I like the customizability of the demo. Since we're on the topic of using the "enemy"'s demos. Do ATI demos work on Nvidia cards?

Well I, personally, think Dawn looks a bit 'top heavy' but if thats all I can see wrong with the demo, then I could care less what anyone thinks about it. Its a freakin demo!!!

I'm sure ati said a while ago that their later demos (9700 onwards, possibly 8500 too) won't check for ati chips and will run providing the hardware supports the pixel shader level required. I know if I force my 8500 to only eg PS1.3 the demos give me a fairly generic, 'Ps1.4 supporting adapter needed to run the demo blah blah' nothing about an ati card needed to run the demo. Anyone with an FX want to download some and try both 8500 and 9700 demos? |

Hey, such anticipation dashed. When I try and run the demo - it comes back with "Dawn has encountered a problem and needs to close" dialog. Anybody else had this problem? I have a Sapphire Radeon 9700Pro with the latest catalyst. I've also extracted the opengl32.dll in the right place as instructed. help please!

Did you put opengl32.dll in the bin folder?

yeah. Trying to run the demo without it brings up a message saying I need an nvidia card, so it must be recognising the file when it is there

The demo works for me, but when I try to run it at 6xAA and 16xAF it bugs out and fills the screen with all kinds of weird geometric shapes on my 9700pro- Anyone else see this with all settings maxed out in the driver control panel? I think it may have something to do with running out of video and or system memory or something.
Other than that it works great.
