AMD Phenom X3: One too little or one too much?

"The AMD Phenom X2 was announced quite some time ago but still hasn't seen the light of day; instead we were greeted by the X3 Phenom, a new breed of processor, first in the market to offer a Triplecore solution. This CPU is priced lower than AMD's own X4 and Intel Core 2 Duo series. In our review today we test the Phenom X3 8450 and compare it to an AMD X4 and Intel C2D."

Why is this product out there? No reason to exist.

Exists for one reason only, a sink for part working quads, making a product out of a reject.

Quite who a triple caore will appeal to, is another question, as it can already be a tough choice between a lower clocked quad and a higher clocked dual at similar prices, which is best depends on how well streamed the target applications are.

Something that can take advantage of a quad, will take a 25% hit on a triple, while something that cannot fully load both cores of a dual, will gain nothing from a triple.

Maybe the triple is for situations where you could use a quad, but can't afford the price?
