McAfee: Super Spam Us!

The entire month of April, participants will expose themselves to spam using a Dell laptop provided by McAfee - which they will keep - sans spam protection and with a fresh email address. As the month goes by, participants will blog about their experiences on McAfee - SPAM Experiment (participants will blog in their native languages).

Day 0, nothing to report.

It's unclear how the emails used are going to be exposed, some ways I would choose, particularly to compare risk factors, would be:
1. Posting to newsgroups, they always say that those are trawled.
2. Website with mailto
3. Website with no email, but anything@sitename works
4. Signing up for stacks of free stuff

Unless the email addresses are already exposed in some way, I can see this being a very dull experiment.

I've got an email address which only receives mail from a certain mailing list and redirects it to another address. I log in once in awhile and I haven't had a single spam message in 3 years, so, unless people really start using those addresses a lot, it really might become a rather dull experiment. Still, it may not be so, as I've heard that, of late, spammers have started sending mail to addresses they aren't sure exist, but are probable (common.nick@knownservice.com).
