Windows Update now checking for pirated VLK keys!

It looks like Microsoft has wisened up and they are slowly closing the loopholes in this activation scheme with live checking of keys. Maybe the release of the VLK product key was from within Microsoft itself so they could use it as an excuse to launch this new initiative?"

What is the difference between that, and a regular product key? Is it for businesses or something?

Not a problem for me, I'm using an "Official" WinXP disk and it's only installed on THIS system. So I'm cool.

Yeah me too, but what does that mean? Is VLK reffering to all product keys or just certain kinds of them?

A VLK is for companies that need to have many copies of Windows installed.
To escape the hassle of activation of all those systems, they buy a VLK.
With the VLK, the system never needs to be activated.
But now with the leaked VLK's, MS is removing them from the list of valid Product Keys.

... I think I got that right

Windows Update stopped working for me several days ago... Of course I use a VLK key, it's Windows 2003 Server I have installed. I don't use it as a server though, so I'm not terribly affected by this key blocking spree. Updates are not crucial for a workstation...

I'm surprised MS moved in so quickly... They waited until XP SP1 last time.

I'm sure there will be a workaround for this in the future, but I plan to remove someday this final build of W2003Server and move to something else... Longhorn, that is... I'll be waiting for the first beta, august maybe... So far it's too buggy to play with.
