DirectX 9.0c April Redistributable

Microsoft has released an April 2007 update for DirectX 9.0c.

A nice speedy download can be gotten here:

Download DX 9.0C April 2007 Redistributable

This is NOT an April Fool's joke.

Once you install it, check the updated files. It is an April, 2007 Redistributable that updates certain files. I've got an image uploaded to Imageshack but Imageshack isn't updating my upload images right now.

Here's from the download site I posted:

"File Name
directx_apr2007_redist.exe

File Size
49MB
Description
DirectX 9.0c will help improve multimedia experiences on most PCs. This latest version of DirectX offers improved security, updated graphics, faster frame rates, and support for massively multiplayer games. It also features more immersive audio when running and displaying programs rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3-D animation and surround sound. If you had an earlier version of DirectX installed on your system, you will see little difference in available space on your hard drive following the installation. DirectX 9.0c will overwrite any earlier versions. This release also resolves a number of minor bugs and included security updates.

Important notes: This is the 'redist' version - all files are downloaded in one package (rather than an active download). DirectX is a crucial system component. It cannot be uninstalled without reinstalling your operating system (!). Released April 2007.

So, why would someone that has the January of February redist want to install this one?

Unh oh! I downloaded and installed the April version and it says they removed it due to it needs to be "fixed". Wonder what I broke when I installed it?

???

They pulled the whole download, say it needs to be "fixed" and I already bloody installed it! It "updated" 17 of my DX files too. Anyway to revert other than a system restore??

This was on the MS website yesterday afternoon:

This download provides the DirectX end-user multi-languaged redistributable that developers can include with their product. The redistributable license agreement covers the terms under which developers may use the Redistributable. For full details please review the DirectX SDK EULA.txt and DirectX Redist.txt files located in the license directory.

Additional Information

The DirectX redist installation includes all the latest and previous released DirectX runtime. This includes the bi-monthly D3DX, XInput, and Managed DirectX components.

The DirectX runtime cannot be uninstalled. We recommend Windows Me and Windows XP users create a "System Restore" point before installing. For information on creating a restore point, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:
Windows Millennium Edition: Microsoft Knowledge Base article 267951.
Windows XP: Microsoft Knowledge Base article 310405.

This update is recommended for users that do not have internet connection during installation

If you would like the websetup version of the runtime package, please click here.

I'm hoping it's not related as I've not played BF2 in over a month, but when I tried to play it tonight after this update the game won't launch.

System Restore has saved me more than once. I used to have it disabled after reading about improved performance etc, then when I needed it once I couldn't use it and paid for it. Since then it is always on.
Just make sure to delete old files every couple of weeks to save space.

Guys, just download the FEB 07 release again and run the DXSETUP.exe.

That's what I did and it updated those same files for me again.

At least try that and see if it fixes things before going to too much trouble.

I installed Feb07 over top of the April update the files are still all the same size and version just different dates.

Updating DirectX with an earlier version won't do the trick. The updater automatically looks for out of date files and updates them. Meaning if something is a newer version, it does nothing. Also, XP system restore won't roll back direct x to an earlier version, something I ran into one time a couple years ago.

IMO, updating direct x with one of the monthly builds is a waste of time, you just don't see performance increases. I usually run it when I install a new game and leave it at that. I assume that if them release some grand update that improves performance, you would hear about it from all over the net.

Fixed version of the April redist is up on M$ now.

EDIT: There was an instant reboot after the update with no warning message displayed. There were some MHSupdate entries in the event viewer but no errors. It scared me for a second.

Not quite a waste, Viking. The problem stems from developers usage of certain builds, sometimes even requiring that specific build to be installed on the host machine before a game or app will run. I've seen games specifically require one file that was only available in a later distribution (although offhand I can't remember the name of one specific one atm, I do remember some EA Sports titles running into that issue where you would get "Installation cannot continue because this game requires DirectX9.0c or higher to be installed on your system" even though it was installed... just not THAT distro version that the game requires). Most times developers will put that distribution version on the game CD, but the catch is that sometimes DX installers will see that it's already installed (ie. DX9.0c), and decide that there is no update needed, even though 1 specific file is missing that a game requires, or an update/fix to an exisiting file that is only updated in that new release, and which a game was programmed to use.

Normally, I would say you're right on about this. But, in almost every instance where I've tried to install DirectX (whatever version) over a previous one, it simply would start the installation, find nothing to update, and then exit.

But, in this particular case where I ran the FEB 07 release again, it actually went through several files that it was copying/installing and took several moments to complete. So, based on that much different behavior, it does seem that it did some overwriting of files. We'll never know for sure now as I'm about to install the fixed APR 07 version.

Just glad MS got it fixed in such a short time.

No reboot happened after the update on my system (updating the "broken" version with the "fixed" version), just "ready to use" message.

I think that FAH GPU client requires some updated DX9 build to function properly.

Yeah, thats why I install the updates that come with games, to enable use of new features the game may use. I don't think its quite like a driver update though, which may optimise existing applications.

Anyway, heres what I found as the changes in this release (from Beyond3d)...

Improvements to XACT, PIX and the HLSL Shader Compiler. There's also a new sample illustrating "Effect Pools', which make it possible to share variable or shaders between effects, thus saving redundant state-setting calls.
