Windows Vista has had incredible reception: Gates

Source: Reuters
_______________
Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates said on Tuesday the company's Windows Vista operating system has received an incredible reception.

Gates made the comments at a news conference after announcing a C$139 million ($118 million) funding initiative by his Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Canadian government to search for an HIV/AIDS vaccine.

Last week, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said analysts' forecasts for fiscal 2008 revenue for the Windows Vista operating system were "overly aggressive".

Incredible reception?

Sure, the "wait for's" have come out of the woodwork, in the same stage-managed, post-christmas release that any new technology gets.

As a retail upgrade to XP though, the potential problems and the price outweigh any benefits.

On a new system, if it didn't have Vista or "free upgrade", you'd want a discount that would go a fair way to covering it. While XP will be a usable OS for some time (it didn't sudddenly become any less capable on the day Vista released), Vista will carry the proprietary OS torch forward until the next version. Some users will stay on the upgrade treadmill, others will jump off and get back on only when they feel like it.
