Today we have a look at the newly released drivers from both ATI and Nvidia for Windows Vista. Are things in good enough shape for us to forget about gaming on Windows XP?

Great job! Looks like it will take a while for Vista to become stable/problem free enough to replace XP for the majority of gamers.

I would buy Vista as soon as you can afford it and dual boot with XP so you can learn how to set vista up in a non critical working environment using XP as a fall back. This means when the time finally comes that you can move away from XP you have Vista well set up and are aware of all the drivers and installations.

Just remember to get this handy (free) tool for multi booting with Vista, saves so much time http://www.vistabootpro.org/

Cannyone will become famous soon enough
System Specs

I personally would like to go with 64-bit Vista, but there just isn't enough real support for 64-bit "anything" currently. Also I think MS has changed their strategy regarding OEM versions of Vista - they will either be 32-bit, or 64-bit, but not both.

Where are these drivers available from? I can only see the Dec beta release ones when searching for Vista 32-bit drivers on the ATI site.

"The driver will support DX9, DX10 (8800 series only), OpenGL and limited DX9.0 SLI support. DX10 support will follow in a future driver..." (from the NVIDIA driver review)

Huh? Is DX10 in or not?

Shouldn't this be stickied in the Windows Radeon Display Drivers section? A little easier to find....

Vista Drivers

This is definitely good news. I haven't bought the new Microsoft OS because I was worried that some of my favorit games, especially the old ones, might encounter incompatibility problems with Vista. It's comforting to know that game manufacturers have addressed this problem. But I'm sure there are some producers who have failed to do so. Don't fret, though. There are Web-based services that offer Windows Vista drivers. I'm currently relying on http://www.radarsync.com/vista for my impending Vista driver needs. For those of you who are having driver problems on the new Microsoft OS, try the service that I'm using.

Forget gaming, I can't even get the Vista drivers to work at all. Since this is my main computer and I'm not even considering yet another system rebuild to another OS, I'm stuck with Vista and have to wait for them to fix all the kinks. Will AMD ever correct all the massive usability problems with the drivers now that they swallowed ATI? Have a look at my thread in the Mobility forum... they really need to get their crap together. Right now it's darn near unusable...

I almost wonder if going back to an older beta version of the Vista drivers is worth a try... but at the moment, the ATI drivers aren't even usable. I have to rely on the crap Microsoft bundled with the OS...

Very sound advice. I'm still not brave enough to put and keep Vista on a system. I did the testing and found that experience troubling enough. Eventually they'll get stuff fixed, but Bleeding Edge is not where I want to be.
